'The Daily' Is 'On Target' to 'Break Even' in 'Five Years'

Here's today's fascinating and maybe really unlikely media assertion from the Times: "A $30 million tablet-only news publication... with 100,000 subscribers paying 99 cents a week or $39.99 a year, and 250,000 unique readers each month, The Daily is on target to break even in five years." A Look Inside News Corp.'s "Business Conduct" Manual!

On Tuesday, Parliament published a heap of correspondence related to the News of the World phone-hacking investigation. Included in the document haul was News Corp.'s "Standards of Business Conduct" manual, which the Murdoch camp had dutifully forwarded to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee upon request. Hacks Hacked? News Corp Email Dump Promised for Tomorrow

See you tomorrow, apparently, giant trove of News Corp emails (or at least emails from their newspaper publishing division, News International) obtained by LulzSec by means not dissimilar to how News of the World (and others?) obtained information for their reporting. Maybe we will get a nice view of just how frequently (legal disclaimer: IF AT ALL) James Murdoch lied before Parliament today?

Murdoch's Brilliant International Tax Game

"News Corp. has 152 subsidiaries in tax havens, including 62 in the British Virgin Islands and 33 in the Caymans. Among the hundred largest U.S. companies, only Citigroup and Morgan Stanley have more tax haven subsidiaries than News Corp." READ MORE

At News Corp., Fox Is the Loser -- Not Newspapers!

Lest we forget just how immense Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is: "The company ended the quarter with $8.2 bn cash, up from $7.3 bn sequentially, and $13.5 bn debt, down from $15.3 bn sequentially." Yowza! That's from the new Goldman Sachs analyst paper on the giant. The cable networks are growing-and various newspaper wings are up significantly over last year-but it's Fox that's struggling. Rebekah Wade Will Shake Up News International

Spouse-beating Sun editor Rebekah Wade has been named the chief executive of News International, in which capacity she will be responsible for overseeing News Corp's British daily papers (News of the World, the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times). When it predicted the move back in March, the Guardian saw it as a way to groom James Murdoch as his father Rupert's eventual successor; the news today has the younger Murdoch remaining in Wapping, News International's headquarters as executive chairman. No matter what it means for the future of News Corp, Wade, who will report to James Murdoch, will surely be able to beat the papers into shape, battering inefficiency and leading the assault on rival organizations.

The Wall Street Journal's New Rent

The Wall Street Journal is moving into five floors at 1211 Sixth Ave., home of Fox News and the New York Post. That building's floors are about 40,000 square feet, so, if they were paying a full $80 a square foot, the rent comes to a nice $1.3 million a month! Now, being a big tenant of the building, Rupert Murdoch is probably paying less. However, they're also renting out additional space (WHY?) at 1185 Sixth Ave., because apparently 200,000 square feet isn't enough, so perhaps they are paying more. Also, random math indicates that electric and the like for five floors should be something like $600,000 for the year.
