When but a girl, I used to stay up quite late watching TV (exciting in itself!) trolling for Fred Astaire or Marx Brothers movies in a sea of horrific late-night jangling commercials like those featuring, in his white cowboy hat, the car dealer Cal Worthington "and his dog, Spot" (who turned out to be an elephant, often as not). Thus it was that one night I discovered "Monty Python's Flying Circus," a phenomenon that roared like a hurricane across the plain of my tender psyche, ending in an hoarse, explosive "It's!" They call me “Two Soups.” Sometimes. And by “they,” I mostly mean one person. "They" call me this because I sometimes order two soups for lunch. Like, instead of “soup and a sandwich,” or “soup and a salad,” I’ll have soup and another soup. A different soup. I like soup that much. (I could perhaps marry Jennifer Coolidge in Best In Show and sit with her and eat soup and talk or not talk. She’d prefer the latter, I would bet.)

Crap. Anthony Lane's review of Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus makes me sad. Because it is not a glowing rave, and I was really looking forward to this movie and wanted it to be good. I still want to see it. But this criticism, like so much of Lane's writing, is very astute: "I have no idea… whether C.G.I. was the best or the worst thing that could have happened to Terry Gilliam. Terence Graham Parry Jones, the most underrated member of the Monty Python team, turns 70 today. If I started picking out clips I would never finish, so we'll just leave it at this one and wish the man many happy returns.
