In financial circles, the Miami Heat making the NBA Finals is what could be considered a solid return on investment. When the team was cobbled together, an appearance in the NBA Finals seemed like its destiny. Then we saw them play and there appeared to be a chance that they might not even make past the first round of the playoffs. We bought into the Celtics, the Magic, the Bulls. (And by ‘we’ I mean ‘me’ and maybe you, too.)
Yet the NBA Finals, which begin tonight with the Dallas Mavericks looking to pull a “not so fast” on the Miami Heat, feature as much a “team of destiny” [...]

“So what’s your theme this week?”
It was a simple question from a friend, one that I laughed off, but privately sent me spiraling. As we all know, sports don’t have a new theme every week. This isn’t fashion with “a return to femininity!” or “urban lumberjack cool!” It’s basketball. Games are won, games are lost. Occasionally, if you get lucky, you can follow a group of players that behave, both collectively and individually, in an engaging and flamboyant manner and that creates its own good story.
The Miami Heat aka the Heatles, would certainly fall into that category. And yet, even when the players contribute [...]

I have a friend who, several years ago, was accused of a fairly serious, non-violent (or even icky, for that matter) crime. It was a bad situation, or would have been so had he been convicted. Like, orange-jumpsuit bad. Smartly, he’d hired a hotshot criminal defense attorney who hatched a plan to get my friend off using what I like to call the “Idiot Defense.”
It consisted of the lawyer standing in front of the judge and, in effect, saying, “My client is an idiot. He behaved in a certain manner that may seem to be counter to coherent, rational thought because his brain doesn’t operate like the rest [...]

In the weeks leading up to LeBron James’ return the Cleveland, the rhetoric on both sides of the Cuyahoga river was ratcheted up to levels epic even for fans in a city that has already been savagely beaten with life’s stick on repeated occasions.
I may make fun of the city of Miami’s vacuousness and lack of anything cool other than an art festival that shares a name with an equally uncool Swiss city, but Cleveland is almost too real: gritty and harsh, like the lighting in gas station rest rooms. The Clevelanders I know are smart and dependable as hell, but the city is actually hell.

Covering the Miami Heat was supposed to be fun, much like a six-hour trip to the city itself. At least those were my hopes. They were going to win a bunch of games, parading around the country glad-handing fans and opponents, and I was going to sit, perched atop the grassy knoll taking potshots at them.
I was going to mock them the way I mock the Yankees and Patriots—publically scornful, but secretly jealous— and, at the same time, I was going to make fun of the city of Miami, and their fans were going to get angry with me. Because, like fans of any team with an [...]
