Farewell, Larry King, Vampire Referee of America's Cultural Values
Talk show hosts: grr! We hate them! They are so inauthentic and trashy! They are poisoning our culture and so on! But now here it is 2011 and we are sorta-kinda mourning the retirement/evolution of two of the biggest: Oprah and Larry King. Larry aired his farewell on New Year's Eve, counting down the 25 most important moments in his show's history, which at first seems to validate all those old criticisms. Seeing Deep Throat next to Bette Davis and Marlon Brando next to Obama's inauguration sure does make it look like talk shows have no sense of importance. Larry is making serious things less serious, and America is still anxious enough about its own cultural importance that we dislike this. But maybe all of these things are equally serious. And maybe talk shows have become a kind of vital democratic institution. READ MORE
Local Gossip Columnist Finds The Pen To Be Mightier Than The Online Personal Ad
What exactly is News gossipmonger Joanna Molloy trying to do with her bizarre screed on how she could never even think of sleeping with many-times-married CNN yakmeister Larry King, even as she spends 564 words doing exactly that? Is it misguided satire of the way ladies' sexuality is brushed under the rug as they age? Did a slightly tepid item on some D-lister fall through at the last minute? Is she engaging in an extended troll for incisive comments like "Larry's already dreaming of his next wedding cake,it doesn't matter to him what the bride looks like,he love's that wedding cake !"? Or is this some weird attempt to play hard to get in front of an audience — and make off with the cash she mentions over and over again in the piece? If it's the latter, well, hats off to you, lady.
Larry King: Tied with Liz Taylor for Divorces
Larry King, baby. He's still got it! He has filed for divorce number EIGHT. I don't even know how that happens to a human being! Or at least, one who isn't Elizabeth Taylor. They are now tied: eight divorces and seven spouses each, because yes, both of them double-dipped at one point. (I mean, obvs, it was Richard Burton. I would have married that twice too.) Larry, by the way, is 76, and Taylor is 78. Now comes my obligatory comment about the sanctity of heterosexual marriage. Phew, that's taken care of! And in closing, really... wow. Speaking as an abortion-loving Godless homosexual, even I am impressed, Mr. King.
Balloon Boy Lives Etc.
Awl stalwart Mathnet is more or less liveblogging the Balloon Boy Family's appearance on "Larry King Live." Much like the story itself, it is both disturbing and unmissable.
Chris Brown On Larry King: What You May Have Missed
Last night singer Chris Brown-who recently received five years of probation after entering a guilty plea for assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna-appeared on "Larry King Live" in an attempt to rehabilitate his image and perhaps explain what caused such reprehensible acts. As someone who does not believe that domestic violence is any more glamorous or noteworthy when it is perpetrated by or on celebrities, I have only a cursory awareness of the story, and did not tune in. But Awl Director of Business Development/SEO Coordinator David Cho has been following the case since it began, and was eager to explain it to me. If you're also curious as to what transpired, read on. READ MORE
Blustery Bald Man Bellows Truth
Former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura was on Larry King last night, and, well, he said some wacky things, like he always does. Some of those things are not necessarily incorrect, though. For instance, he thinks waterboarding is torture. READ MORE
