How To Fail At Journalism In Exotic Foreign Lands

Budapest had never been my favorite European capital, but a job in a foreign city is always better than a job wherever I happen to be living at the moment. This is why, on a balmy Southern California morning in February of 1996, I voluntarily carried my only possessions to Los Angeles International Airport's Tom Bradley terminal the customary three hours prior to departure. The first two hours passed pleasantly at the airport lounge, where my friend Steve and I drank double Greyhounds served in pint glasses.

The Double Greyhound is just a lot of vodka with grapefruit juice to soften the blow. We had been drinking these regularly in [...]

Gypsy Crime Nation Seeks Solution For Gypsy Crime Problem

Hungary's incoming prime minister, Viktor Orban, went on a little victory lap and ended up in Ord, where a third of the population is Roma. (Orban, as you well know, is the Fidesz guy; the formerly youth-driven fairy-liberal democrat party swung the other way some time ago, and the conservative group has 263 of the 386 seats in the new parliament. Also, the Jobbik party, which can safely be described as "nationalist," now has 47.) So what's the problem in Hungary? Mostly GYPSY CRIME.

The Frightening Politics Of Hungary's House Of Terror

The House of Terror opened in 2002. Since then, it's become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Budapest. It’s a museum, and it presents the last sixty years of Hungarian history through a mix of exhibits and multimedia displays. It’s also a memorial, dedicated to “the victims of both the Nazi and the Communist terror.” The building that houses it, an elegant 19th century villa, was once the headquarters of both the Arrow Cross, the Hungarian Fascist Party, which ruled Hungary for a few bloody months in 1944, and of the Communist Secret Police, up until the 1956 revolution. Thanks to the building’s history and to the dungeons [...]

Hungary Is A "Grubby Hive Of Nationalism," According To Eloquent German Editorialist

"Twenty years after the end of the collectivist dictatorship, Hungary has turned into a grubby hive of nationalism in which far-right blood and soil ideologies are flourishing, pseudo-democrats are hailing the glorious history of the Magyars and militant racists are fighting against an allegedly 'overflowing' number of foreigners and ethnic minorities living in the country by parading around the streets with machetes and Molotov cocktails." -Der Spiegel translates an essay from German paper Die Tageszeitung about the far-right Jobbik party's strong showing in the Hungarian elections that took place on Sunday. Elsewhere in Die Tageszeitung, there's a picture of former German prime minister Helmut Kohl holding a [...]

Toxic Red Sludge Disaster Hits Hungary

Oh God! The Hungarian government has declared a state of emergency after a million cubic feet's worth of toxic red sludge spilled out of a ruptured waste reservoir at an aluminum plant 100 miles southwest of Budapest. The nasty goop has spread across 15.4 square miles and killed five people and injured many other and threatens to contaminate the Danube. So this is sort of like the volcano and the oil spill meet Three Mile Island?
