Andrew Mason And His $378.36 Severance Going Private

When I asked him whether he regretted going public—whether he thought he could have accomplished more without the market pressure—he became incensed. "I feel like the only reason you could be asking me that question is because you think I’m stupid or because you’re trying to see if I’m going to lie to you."

Say what you will about fired Groupon (current share price: 4.53) CEO Andrew Mason—he's a slob, he made terrible choices, his company was pretty close to being a scam for desperate businesses of the recession era—but at least he always makes sure to give a entertainingly terrible interview. I do look forward to [...]

An Enlightened Look At The Grouponomenon

The Ferocious Attack on Groupon

Groupon competitor Yipit comes out with all guns (and some charts!) blazing today, analyzing Groupon's business in Boston. It does seem notable that the cost to acquire a Groupon subscriber is something like $30, while their quarterly revenue per subscriber is $14. (That being said, customer averages are always weighed down by the one-time customer, and businesses rely on the repeat "power user.") And at least the company had $810 million to pay to backers and executives! Buying a printing press to make dollar bills at home would be much more work, it turns out.

Today's Groupon: Helping People with HIV for Half Off

Today's New York City Groupon offering is a 50% discount at Housing Works' nonprofit thrift stores, which raise money to assist people living with HIV. For $20, you can receive $40 worth of things! Oh, just FYI: "A pair of designer shoes that sells for $40 in one of our stores provides ten days worth of hot meals for a homeless HIV+ mother and her child." Enjoy your discount. :(

The Bad Deal: Check Before You Buy an "Online Deal"!

Are you familiar with The Bad Deal? Its proprietor, Ryan Sutton, tracks the ever-expanding group coupon (or, in the parlance, a "GROUPON," LOL) industry for things that are frankly fairly terrible. (For instance? $140 for 90 minutes of stuffing wings in your face at Professor Thoms dive bar. No thanks!) And today comes word of the Daily Candy $80 brunch… in midtown. They break it down like this:

CHARLEE: Hey babe. Wanna have brunch in Midtown Manhattan? RENEE: Not really, who goes to Midtown on the weekends? CHARLEE: But I bought us this great offer: two courses and two cocktails. RENEE: $40 bucks? A cocktail each? [...]

The Fiscal Horrors of the Groupon IPO

The Groupon IPO filing is delightful! It's an enormous, amazing business.

We increased our subscriber base from 152,203 as of June 30, 2009 to 83.1 million as of March 31, 2011.

We sold 116,231 Groupons in the second quarter of 2009 compared to 28.1 million Groupons in the first quarter of 2011.

We grew from 37 employees as of June 30, 2009 to 7,107 employees as of March 31, 2011.

That's incredible! Also? Net loss, before taxes, for all of 2010? $456 million. They lost $146 million last quarter. So yes, last year they lost more than half the value of this year's planned $750 million [...]

Groupon Ready to Make Money in Like… 2014?

"Groupon's filing Wednesday also revealed its financial results for its second quarter, which ended June 30. Groupon's sales came in at a record $878 million, but it lost $102.7 million." —Everybody be carpin' at Groupon but it's hitting records, you see! Groupon also had a first quarter loss of $117.1 million. Let's go buy some!

"Groupon is Essentially Holding a Portfolio of Loans Backed by the Receivables of Small Businesses."

"I strongly encourage every business that is about to go under to call Groupon. It makes total financial sense—as a Hail Mary play. If you’re lucky, the upfront cash will be enough to help you stay afloat. If not, well, you were already going out of business." —The latest GroupOn takedown—one of dozens!—is intriguing.

Catching Up on the Worst Super Bowl Ads

Since the Super Bowl is invisible to me, I didn't see any of its fabled advertisements—including this ad for Groupon here, that has apparently enraged everyone everywhere, what with its fairly completely misplayed sarcasm and tonedeafness and offbase first world self-mockery. (On the upside: at least now "everyone" has heard of Groupon. I guess.) The rest of the crop are rounded up here; gosh I did not miss very much in consuming important brand-related information, did I!
