David Paterson First Out of Gate to Claim Muslims Have a Slashing Coming

I laughed! But the last laugh is on me. This IM conversation took place yesterday afternoon. In it, we wondered: which politician would be the first to suggest that the crazy (alleged!) stabbing of a New York City cab driver because he is a Muslim would be proof that the "Ground Zero Terror Mosque" should be moved? As a gambling man, I always like the long shot. But I went too long. My fine coworker, Mr. Alex Balk, always has his eye on the prize, and so he correctly guessed that the governor of New York State would be the first to try to explain that, yes, of course Muslims will be stabbed if we build a cultural center devoted to understanding and tolerance in lower Manhattan. I regret my error, but I regret David Paterson a whole lot more.

David Paterson's Office Has Ways of Dealing with Mosque Developers (Such as Choking, Intimidating)

David Paterson, the idiotic, misfiring, amazingly inefficient soon-to-be-outgoing governor of New York, will be meeting with the developer of Ground Zero Terror Mosque "later this week." That's because he's a tool of the loony far right. And it's so he can persuade them to move to some other building, one that is more tolerant and more respectful and more American, unlike the buildings within a five-block radius of Ground Zero, which is a zone where contracts and the Constitution don't exist. This is just going to be Paterson's first tactic though! Then, after that meeting doesn't get what he wants, he's going to have the state police call the developers to ask if they can "help." Then he'll send his aide David Johnson over to "have a talk" with them, during which Johnson will tear off their Halloween costumes and choke them a little. It's a fine history that displays how government intrusion into non-government affairs is so successful in New York.

Wacky State Budget Mix-Up Fixed

"It's like Rasputin. It never goes away."
New York governor David Paterson discusses the 2010 budget, which he signed into law last night after discovering that the bill he signed last week was actually an incorrect version mistakenly sent to him by the Assembly. Because, you know, this is New York.

David Paterson Gets Caught Up in the Great "He Said/She Said" Lie

Where I come from ("California"), a man saying "There is no independent evidence presented that would substantiate any claims of violence" about a woman who is pressing assault charges against a boyfriend is pretty much a hanging offense. That's for good reason! To hear it coming from New York's governor is really terrible, sad and stupid.

Yet Another New York State Resignation

Pedro J. Perez, acting superintendent of the New York State police, resigned yesterday. Perez, who took over the superintendent job after the resignation of Harry S. Corbitt in the wake of the David Paterson thing, had himself "authorized the commander of Mr. Paterson's security detail to contact the woman who had accused the governor's aide of assaulting her last fall, according to people with knowledge of his actions."

David Paterson: The Final Days

Ouch: "The governor is scheduled to speak to what's left of his staff at his Manhattan office this afternoon."

Another Paterson Aide Resigns

Who will be the last to quit? "Gov. David Paterson's communications director Peter Kauffmann has resigned his post, effective close of business today.... This comes on the heels of yesterday's ethics charge against the governor in which it became clear that Paterson had not been truthful with Kauffmann about the circumstances surrounding the World Series game for which he obtained tickets from the New York Yankees. Kauffmann is the third member of the Paterson administration to resign over the latest round of scandals."

New York Now a "Riveting Spectacle" of "Political Debasement"!

Hey, what did I miss on my huge, three-day vacation? Oh yay, New York "has descended into a bizarre, riveting spectacle of corruption and political debasement"! (Politico also notes that "At this point, only two of the six statewide elected officials, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, were actually elected to the positions they hold.") David Paterson Needs A Spreadsheet To Keep Track Of His Scandals

And then there's this: "The state Commission on Public Integrity charged Gov. David A. Paterson on Wednesday with violating state ethics laws when he secured free tickets to the opening game of the World Series from the Yankees last fall for himself and others.... In addition to violating the state's ban on gifts to public officials, the commission found that Mr. Paterson falsely testified under oath that he had intended to pay for the tickets for his son and his son's friend. The commission determined that Mr. Paterson had never intended to pay for the tickets and only did so after inquiries from the media, after which he submitted a backdated check as payment."
