And there's more: "Thousands of dead crabs have washed up along the Kent coast, with environmental experts believing the cold weather in Britain is to blame. The Velvet swimming crabs – also called devil crabs – are thought to be victims of Britain's coldest December in 120 years, which left sea temperatures much lower than average. More than 40,000 of the crabs – Britain's largest swimming crab – are littering beaches around Thanet, along with smaller numbers of whelks, sponges and anemones."

"Marine biologists from the National Taiwan Ocean University discovered a new species of crab off the southern Taiwanese coast. With a bright red shell covered with small white spots, the crab resembles a large strawberry." Unfortunately, the two crabs captured by scientists died in captivity shortly after, leading the biologists to discover that they tasted considerably less fragariant than they appeared.

Scientists have observed that female fiddler crabs will provide sex to neighboring males in exchange for protection from other crabs. The discovery is yet another example of females giving it up for goods and services in the animal kingdom: "Red-winged blackbirds do so for the right to forage on a male's territory," notes NewScientist, "and Adelie penguins exchange sex for stones to build their nests."
