Black Hole Sucks Hard, Swallows Whole Thing

What? It's just the majesty of our universe in action! What did you think I was talking about?

Monster Deep-Space Explosion Breaks X-Ray Specs

"The burst was so bright when it first erupted that our data-analysis software shut down. So many photons were bombarding the detector each second that it just couldn't count them quickly enough. It was like trying to use a rain gauge and a bucket to measure the flow rate of a tsunami … When I first saw the strange data from this burst, I knew that I had discovered something extraordinary. It was an indescribable feeling when I realized, at that moment, that I was the only person in the whole universe who knew that this extraordinary event had occurred." -Phil Evans, a postdoctoral research assistant at the [...]

The Amazing Things You Can Do With Your Homemade Black Hole

"Having mastered control over space-time, a super-civilization might want to fabricate their own black holes for a variety of tasks: waste disposal, starship propulsion, hyper-computing, maybe even time travel." —Discovery reports on the work of Clement Vidal of the Evolution, Complexity and Cognition group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, who posits that advanced civilizations of super-aliens have likely figured out ways to "tap the energy resources of an entire galaxy" and engineer the conditions of the universe to their liking. Of course, there are other uses for a homemade black hole.

Mysterious Entity In Neighboring Galaxy Shooting Radiowaves At Earth, But It's Cool, Probably Just A Microquasar Strangely Bereft Of X-rays

A mysterious new celestial entity in the nearby galaxy of M82 is beaming radiowaves toward Earth unlike any others scientists have seen before. "The new object, which appeared in May 2009, has left us scratching our heads," said Tom Muxlow, of University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Observatory. "We've never seen anything quite like this before." The scientists, who have been sitting on this information for almost a year, don't seem to be panicking, so I guess we shouldn't either.

Respected Scientist Needs To Put The Bong Down, Seriously

"We may not be living in our universe at all; we might be living inside a rebounded black hole that exists in a different universe." -Indiana University's Nikodem Poplawski used a modified version of Einstein's general relativity equation to calculate something that doesn't make any sense and hurts my brain to think about. (Apparently it has to do with "singularities," which are not times when the computers will take over, but places where the density of matter reaches infinity. And maybe the portal from Donnie Darko? I don't know.) The video above is about black holes, too. And totally cool to watch.
