T.I. Featuring Big K.R.I.T., "I'm Flexin"

Rapper and novelist T.I. seems to have come out of prison in top form. His newest song, "Here Ye, Here Ye" simmers over an excellent, vintage-sounding Neptunes beat, and he's made a good, back-to-Bankhead video for the one that Big K.R.I.T. helped him with a month or so ago. He says his forthcoming album will be called Kill the King or Trouble. That red car sure looks fast.

The Oakland Police Department's War on Citizens

Oakland's police chief Anthony Batts resigned a couple weeks ago, because, when he wasn't busy applying for other jobs, he was busy trying to turn Oakland into a police state, and that mean old City Council wouldn't let him. His approach to policing was that crime would stop if you instituted a curfew for young people and if you could immediately arrest anyone found "loitering" anywhere in Oakland. Also, a decade on, he and his predecessors still couldn't enforce court-ordered changes to the police department arising from the sensational "Oakland Riders" trials, which also ended in zero convictions of police but a $10 million settlement to 119 different plaintiffs. The court supervision agreement includes not very outlandish things like "Improved reporting and investigation of use of force by officers." Apparently that is not something that can happen in ten years. Longtime department member Howard Jordan took over as chief—for the second time, as retention of chiefs has become a problem for what is an extraordinarily troubled police department. And then, last night happened. READ MORE

Outkast Superfan Puts A Great Amount Of Time And Energy Into Thinking About Outkast Songs

"Picking a winner between 'SpottieOttieDopaliscious'/'ATLiens' is like being asked to decide what is better, Denzel’s mid 90s mustache or my early April mustache? On the surface, they are equal and extremely important to society as a whole. With that said, the times that the members of Outkast decide to tell stories show them at their best and 'SpottieOttieDopaliscious' could not be a better example of that. It takes you to another world for about 7 minutes and when you return, things are slightly different, regardless of how many times you’ve heard it." READ MORE

Dro Featuring T.I. And Gucci Mane, "Freeze Me"

Gucci Mane picks his nose with inimitable style, and T.I. delivers another "melodious, swinging" verse to add to the list of strong performances that are not on his new album No Mercy. But this track—produced by Beat Billionaire and anchored by that great old-cop-show bassoon blast—belongs to Dro. Best known for his preppy wardrobe and the words he chooses to describe its many colors, he gets a nice snarl in his voice here, and holds his own with the kings of his city, Atlanta.

Now Waka Flocka Flame Is Famous, So Everyone Wants To Fight Him

So last we checked on Gucci Mane's crony Waka Flocka Flame, it was to marvel at the cover art of his latest mixtape, Lebron Flocka James Pt. 2. What's he been up to since? Well, the Atlanta rapper has had some success with his single "O Let's Do It." He appeared on The Mo'Nique Show last night to perform it. And he surely enjoyed the peekytoe crab salad at Gucci's welcome home party last week. But also, and unfortunately, while filming a video with Gucci on their city's West side, Flocka was confronted by a group of local guys-one of whom was very vociferous in wanting to fight-who brought along a video camera to catch it all on tape. The clip is not so much fun to watch. It's a bummer. READ MORE

Maybe They Were Thinking About That Coldplay Song

This was probably a bad idea: "Asian-American activists offended that MARTA re-named the train line into the heart of Atlanta's Asian community the 'yellow line' will take their objections to the transit agency's chief on Friday. 'Yellow,' as a term for skin color, carries a generally negative, racist connotation among Asians." [Via]

Atlanta Mayoral Candidate Will Kill You With Robots

It's my two favorite things: guys who hate bums and guys who build killer robots and want to be mayor of Atlanta. Together they are my one favorite thing! The best part is when the robot hoses down the guy who looks like a young Steven Wright. I'd like my robot to do that with the real one.
