As hardcore as they seem, we know thatNinja and Yo-Landi from the South African techno-rap have a soft spot for animals. And there are plenty of animals in the video for their new song, "I Fink U Freeky." Unfortunately, since one of those animals is giant python, all the other ones will soon be dead.

Why can't we stop watching baby animal videos? BECAUSE THEY'RE ADORABLE, obviously. But also there is some kind of Science involved that I didn't really follow because I was too busy looking at the kitty who was all "WHA?" Anyway, enjoy.

2011: The Year Animals Did Stuff http://www.theawl.com/2011/12/2011-the-year-animals-did-stuff http://www.theawl.com/2011/12/2011-the-year-animals-did-stuff#comments Tue, 20 Dec 2011 16:20:24 +0000 Alex Balk http://www.theawl.com/2011/12/2011-the-year-animals-did-stuff
What a year it's been for animals! It's hard to believe it was a mere twelve months ago when the animals got together and decided that this was going to be the year that they did stuff. And boy did they ever! Will 2012 be filled with as much stuff-doing by animals as this year was? Only a fool would venture to predict. But until then, we can always relive the magic of the stuff the animals did this year with this video, a tribute to stuff and its doing. Enjoy, everyone! Except those of you who get squicked out by that cat with two faces, who shows up pretty early here. You guys might want to just look away.

Animals And Morality http://www.theawl.com/2011/11/animals-and-morality http://www.theawl.com/2011/11/animals-and-morality#comments Tue, 01 Nov 2011 15:30:09 +0000 Alex Balk http://www.theawl.com/2011/11/animals-and-morality "People used to like to make that stark division between human and nonhuman animals. But there's just no doubt that the scientific evidence for animal morality is accumulating as more and more animals are studied."
—Ethologist Marc Bekoff discusses recent research showing that animals may have a sense of right and wrong. Fortunately, the only species discussed here are dogs and penguins, so you can still eat your burger without too much worry.

Maybe Cat People Really Are Losers http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/maybe-cat-people-really-are-losers http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/maybe-cat-people-really-are-losers#comments Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:50:09 +0000 Choire Sicha http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/maybe-cat-people-really-are-losers "While visiting her mother in Pennsylvania this month, Lauren Pytel, a 47-year-old high school English teacher who lives in Tudor City, found herself pining for her cats, Tiggles ap Caduet and Munchie Effexorov, and their recently deceased siblings, Claritin and Zoloft."
Much like with Occupy Wall Street, when you're a cat person, sometimes it's real hard to deal with your fellow travelers. But yes: now you can play with the cats at Bideawee (a very fine shelter!) online, by means of the Internet. It's just like going to a Brooklyn deli to pet cats, except you don't get your hands dirty (or, you know, seltzer).

Today Is A Good Day To Revisit The Idea Of Rewilding North America http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/let-the-animals-roam-free http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/let-the-animals-roam-free#comments Wed, 19 Oct 2011 11:00:31 +0000 Dave Bry http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/let-the-animals-roam-free "'Rewilding'—bringing elephants, cheetahs, and lions out of captivity to run free in parts of North America—could help save these megafauna from global extinction. More important, it would restore to the continent biological functions lost millenniums ago. The big guys would help stop the march of the pests and weeds—rats and dandelions—that will otherwise take over the landscape. And they would promote the natural processes that generate biodiversity."
Today is a good day to revisit the interesting idea that Josh Donlan wrote about six years ago: to populate the North American plains with African megafauna. Here's hoping the Siberian tiger is not one of the animals that have been shot by the Zanesville police so far, and that it makes it to the 250 miles to the Canadian border. (Without killing and eating any humans, of course.)

By Wednesday morning officers in the rural, eastern Ohio area had already killed dozens of animals that escaped from a wild-animal preserve – the Muskingum County Animal Farm – and where the owner's body later was found. Employees from the Columbus Zoo also went to the farm hoping to tranquilize and capture the animals.... The county Sheriff Matt Lutz described them as 'wild animals that you would see on TV in Africa.' They include lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, camels and bears."
