★★★★ Morning was pale gray and foggy again, but now not at all hot, the air damp but moving. The sun began coming out, which felt as if it might be a bad development, especially with the stench of the post-holiday garbage still hovering. The clouds yielded only gradually, so that the day never fell into immoderation—just a blanketing warmth under soft-edged formations. The late shade was deeper than it had been; light came through purple western clouds to land on a judicious sampling of highlights. On the long, shadowed eastern face of the neighboring apartment slab, windows reflected bright coppery bits of sunlit buildings.
