★★ The sun came and went in bursts, the breeze in gusts. Neither one was dependable. Only the wet air was consistent, as the numbed-out remains of summer did the minimum to hold on. For a moment, downtown, the shadows were almost sharp. A man strolled by in a golden blazer and two-toned shoes, a straw boater cocked southward. At least someone was still making a season of it.
