Whistleblower: Met Fundraising Tactics Go Beyond Stink-Eye
"A former Metropolitan Museum of Art supervisor claims he was often ordered to threaten the removal of visitors who refused to fork over the recommended high admission fees. 'I arranged for security officers to forcibly remove the museum visitors who demanded entry without paying,' the whistleblower told The Post."

I give them $5. If I get a comment or snotty look from the cashier (which I usually do), I tell them I'll be needing the other $20 when I go to their cafeteria for a coffee and a muffin.
I never pay more than a quarter, and have never had a problem.
I never pay more than a few dollars, and no one's ever said anything or even looked askance. Figure the tourists can subsidize it for us New Yorkers.
I took my dad there a few months ago, and when he tried to pay $50 for the two of us, the lady behind the counter said, "You don't actually have to pay that much, you know." She talked him down to $20.
For 40 years +, I've paid whatever felt right, often less than a dollar when broke, more if working; never a haughty comment or attitude.
I think the key word here might be "demanded."
I give them a quarter and say, "One cheap bastard's special, please." They have so much money. However, I pay the Brooklyn Museum's full suggested admission. A great place with some great shows that is a bit down at the heels.
