Newspaper Article From 1694 Misreporting Activities Of Heathen Chinese Emperor Holds Important Lessons For Twitter, Breaking News, Etc.

Even without Twitter and Jesus, the Kangxi Emperor ruled for 61 years!
"[T]he reporter announces 'no considerable News, except that the Emperor of China, his Court, and a great Part of his Kingdom have embraced the Christian Religion; but this is too extraordinary to be believed without farther Confirmation.' It got me thinking about the media conversation in the wake of the Newtown shooting—about how, like during so many breaking stories, reporters were too quick to report details that turned out to be incorrect."

I wouldn't consider the Chinese Empire converting to Christianity a "detail," per se.

The Kangxi Emperor did have lots of Jesuits in his court, because they were good at science and knew how to build cannons and could translate things into Chinese, and they would dress appropriately for Chinese polite society! But then the Dominicans narc'd them out to the pope because they were letting Chinese Catholics keep their ancestor-altars, and then Kangxi kicked all the Christians out, for "causing trouble," the end.

@jfruh I knew you'd come through with the crazy backstory, Josh! That history degree is paying off after all! (I mean, not "paying," in terms of comments, but in terms of … in terms of A Life Well Lived.)

@Ken Layne I send UC Berkeley an invoice once a quarter for all the history related comments I leave on websites. I haven't seen any checks yet, but now that California is taxing its rich more, maybe I will?
