Baby, I Will Handle Your Food All Night

"Preparing a meal — not just the eating that follows — is a multisensory experience that can expose many behaviors, from creativity and generosity to control issues and messiness. Cooking with someone who knows his or her way around the kitchen can be a kind of foreplay — or, on the flip side, it could send up deadly red flags. Pay attention to everything: not just kitchen skills but how he or she reacts in preliminary discussions about the meal, shops, handles the food and the bill and more. There may not be clinical evidence, but as a professional chef who has shared my kitchen with countless friends and partners over the decades, I can assure you this exercise is as informative as any Myers-Briggs–type assessment tool." Oh, Lordy – thank heaven I didn't start baking until after the wedding.

Also an excellent test….loading the dishwasher.

Does your mate load it like a normal human being, or do they turn into an OCD order freak? Do they scrub each dish down, completely? Do they reload the dishwasher, taking every piece out that was already loaded, putting it back in so not only are like items grouped together by size, but also by color and texture? Do they arbitrarily decide that plastics can only go on the right, while glass goes on the left (and NEVER vice-versa)? Do they morph from perfectly nice, sweet, human into plate hurling Hulk?

Not paying attention to this may lead to 20 years of fighting while standing by the dishwasher. SO I'VE HEARD.

@hockeymom Honestly, I am one of those people who wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I wish I could be the kind of man you want me to be, I really do.
