Bloomberg Takes Strong Stand Against Extreme Socialism

It's Friday, so it's the day that New York City Mike Bloomberg says tons of wild stuff! The living wage bill, if you haven't been tracking, provides a guaranteed minimum wage for people who work on some projects that have New York City subsidies. It will affect literally hundreds of people. Heh. Perhaps 500, and those workers would be guaranteed at least "$10 an hour with benefits, or $11.50 an hour without benefits." This kind of socialism will not stand in Mike Bloomberg's New York—guess we'll just have to wait till Chris Quinn's glorious Soviet paradise. You know what would be awesome? If we spent a ton of City money to prevent this from happening! Oh, what? We're actually going to do that? Neat.

This is a terrible bill. Raising the minimum wage citywide would be one thing, probably a great idea. But imposing a minimum wage only on certain city-financed projects will just make it more expensive for the city to finance its own projects, and drive down interest from potential tenants. It's just government shooting itself in the foot.

Given how it has now been established that it's basically impossible to live in New York for less than $500,000 a year, shouldn't anyone earning less than that just leave the city entirely?

I mean, how the hell do you even afford helicopter fuel on $10/hr?

@stuffisthings You ARE helicopter fuel at $10/hr

I always wonder if Quinn and Bloomberg work this shit out in private to help Quinn's candidacy. "OK, now you should propose this liberal-sounding but mostly inconsequential policy, and then I'll come out really strongly against it, to show that you're not in my pocket and to make people think it actually is a big, consequential policy."
