We Were Totally Blacked Out Last Night But We're Okay Now (For Now)

It sounds outlandish, doesn't it, that, forty-some years after we stopped seizing obscene books, the government would get back into the censorship game all over again—and in a big way. But it's already happened: as you'll surely remember with horror, the Department of Homeland Security seized some websites over claims of copyright infringement—and then held them in limbo for a year, stonewalling with the legal system. That went just so well: we're sure that the U.S. government is oh-so-prepared to start seizing websites on a mass scale.

We really encourage you to make some noise today. Like much of the rest of the web, we're totally vulnerable. (Hech, so are you and your Tumblr.) For more reading on SOPA/PIPA, here's this great analysis and here's a PDF of the group protest letter by law professors sent back in July.

if you need to figure who your state rep is (and more importantly their phone number) to voice your concerns govtrack lets you search by your address http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd

@jbsquare if yinz go to wikipedia, they've got a search-by-ZIP set up, along with talking points. all ya really gotta say, though, is that the bills are too broad and overreaching and that the Senator/Representative shouldn't support them.

I would suggest DC residents contact the congresspeople that refuse to consider statehood/allowing a voting a DC rep.

@Vicky I was just coming here to bitch that, as a DC resident, I have no elected officials with voting power to whom I can complain. But now you've stolen my thunder.

@cherrispryte There is enough thunder for everyone! I am no longer a DC resident, actually, but that's what I did when I was a resident ("Since you are so intent on keeping me and my 600,000 neighbors without a voice in Congress, Rep. Shitheel, I am calling to voice my concerns about....").
