"The Pentagon Will Abandon its Ability to Fight Long, Drawn-Out Wars"

That's how the Army Times summarizes the cost-cutting at the Pentagon today. Plus: "The military will also reduce its nuclear weapons stockpile." (Don't be too alarmed about the Pentagon: they can still bend light to make things invisible.) So, anyway, how is that hopey-changey stuff working out for you?

I hope the National Guard still sells Somoas.

Aha -- TO BE SURE:

The Pentagon will abandon its long-time ability to fight two major wars simultaneously but will still be able to deny an aggressor in a second region while already engaged in another.

So we'll still be able to fight at least one major war at a time. Phew.

Humorously/interestingly, the US military actually has no nuclear weapons of its own. Design, manufacture, and testing of nuclear weapons is the responsibility of the Department of Energy, and technically the weapons are just "on loan" to the military, per wikipedia.

I think the nuclear weapon budget is even part of the DOE budget, but don't quote me on that.

Did you guys know that civilians suffer because of our long, drawn-out wars? I read about it yesterday in the Times!

Wait, is this because of the hippies Obama secretly stacked his administration with, or because the supercommittee failed to come up with a deficit cutting plan? Wasn't the stick that would get Congress to pass the supercommittee's recommendation a set of automatic defense cuts? Or is everyone just pretending that never happened?

They do understand the difference between "war" and "occupation/colonization", don't they?

The military does, but it doesn't seem like politicians or the public are clear on the concept.

Good thing we still have the F-35. Al Qaeda's air force won't stand a chance once those things are finished!

"The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots."

@NeonTrotsky Has anyone suggested that we prosecute future wars through a Street Fighter style video game?

@theheckle Personally, I think the best solution to resolving international conflict is presented in the 1990 film "Robot Jox" in which giant robots--one representing each superpower--fight it out in single combat.
