The Books of 2012

The forthcoming big books of 2012 include Katherine Boo, with, at last, that nonfiction book (the blurbs are wild!) and Marilynne Robinson—though with essays, not, of course, a new novel. There are a couple of other solid books on the docket, but honestly? 2012 seems a little light in the publishing loafers, compared to 2011: it looks like a line-up of serious but not particularly exciting 2nd and 4th novels and also lots of posthumous archive-wrangling. The upside of the list from this side of the year: maybe the best books of 2012 will be unexpected, all surprises and weirdo first novels and translations!

@jolie I thought I was the only one who remembered this.

@boyofdestiny Nope, I was going to ask the same thing. Choire, is your book still happening and when?

Choire Sicha

@Rosebud Ha! I think I'm on the HarperCollins roster for 2013. Um, probably not early 2013 either. Crazy world, right?

@Choire Sicha Didn't you sign that book deal while you were still at Radar? WE CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG.

Choire Sicha

@jolie Ha! Hmm. Well, I spent a year reporting, which ended on March 1 of 2010, then I turned it in nine months later, on January 4 of 2011, and then I got a first edit back last month. In the not-near future we'll talk about this in greater detail. :)

@Choire Sicha Okay! This is all very exciting and I will behave now!

Will you be smoking on the jacket cover with like a cat on your lap? PLEASE! This is maybe the most important part. Maybe you should reenact some old author photos?

jolie
jolie (#16)

@zidaane This is my current favorite, though a GIS for "Choire Sicha" returned some incredible results, including this one, entitled MEAT.JPG, that I'd not seen before. 2012 you guys!

@Choire Sicha Good lord, for anyone who has published things on the internet the pace of book publishing must be MADDENING.

Choire Sicha

@jfruh I have no comment on that at this time. ";)"

@jolie ANY still from the old video chats.
He's going to be mad if we keep posting links but this-

(so innocent). You can use really old photos because no one has the time to check that kind of thing and do math.

Choire Sicha

@zidaane Here's the thing: I look way better now than I ever did before. I'm "aging" into my "looks." So I'm getting some nudie shots commissioned for the book.

zidaane
zidaane (#373)

@Choire Sicha You're going to get totally inked up first I presume?

jolie

@Choire Sicha WOOF! MEAT DOT JPEG AMIRITE????

Choire Sicha

@zidaane "get"

Choire Sicha

I am expecting your book to be the most quotable book of 2012.

Is this the proper forum to talk about how excited I am for everyone else to read The Dead Do Not Improve?

roboloki

Jay Kang
Jay Kang (#7,344)

@camelface Are you my publicist? My New Year's Resolution 2012: Stop reading hateful sarcasm into everything. Dispense more hateful sarcasm around the Internet because everyone must pay for my paranoia.

Choire Sicha

@Jay Kang THAT'S A TERRIBLE RESOLUTION. NO NO NO.

Everyone is excited about this book!

roboloki
roboloki (#1,724)

@Jay Kang perfect paranoia is perfect awareness.
(choire is right. we are looking forward to this book!)

camelface
camelface (#4,600)

@Jay Kang Didn't mean to incite paranoia. I'm not your publicist but Crown does pay my bills (barely). Don't let that detract from my endorsement though, DEAD was the best book I've read all year.

Jay Kang

@camelface @choire I feel like I discovered the fifth noble truth-- everyone is always laughing at you. That's how I read Salman Rushdie's twitter, at least. It's all about me or how else do I explain it?

Not a man for all sequels. I can't wait for this. I have to go reread Wolf Hall now.

Daniel Sada's "Casi Nunca" will be published in translation in April.

When does Sean Wilsey's gondolier memoir come out?

jfruh

All of James Joyce's stuff hit public domain on January 1, so look for some crazy Finnegans Wake mashups, everywhere!

boyofdestiny
boyofdestiny (#1,243)

@jfruh The beauty of this is, you can publish ver batim passages from Finnegans Wake and label it a mashup, and no one would know the difference.

C_Webb
C_Webb (#855)

@boyofdestiny: Like that episode of Glee where Harold Bloom and James Woods stop by!
