Man Hatless

"An earlier version of this article incorrectly described imagery from 'The Shining.' The gentleman seen with the weird guy in the bear suit is wearing a tuxedo, but not a top hat."

Oh, it is most definitely the Calumet cans/Indian genocide guilt. The most boring interpretation, but look at 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut -- dude had the best eye ever and a 30 watt brain to go with.

@dntsqzthchrmn : Kubrick, not Brando.

@dntsqzthchrmn As a committed Kubrick fanatic ever since latching onto him as an overenthusiastic college sophomore, I have to say that's one of the most accurate one-liners I've ever read.

That said, if you spend more time watching, say, Paths of Glory, Dr. Stranglove and Barry Lyndon instead of Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut, you would come to a more forgiving conclusion.

(Also, the Calumet theory puts way too much emphasis on just one of several subliminal themes that run under The Shining's filmic surface. I know I just said "filmic," but, as the English say, there it is.)

Well, of course! Top hats are properly worn with white, not black, tie.

And by "seen with" we mean "is either being blown by or is blowing, can't remember which, but definitely someone is blowing someone, right? I'm not making that up?"

@jfruh It's IMPLIED blowing. If you think too hard about the mechanics of bear-suit blowjobs the illusion falls apart.

@deepomega : I'm surprised the Times article didn't mention the overwhelming evidence that The Shining is really an extended pro-furry polemic.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly described the context of a scene from "The Shining." The gentleman wearing the tuxedo is seen with a man dressed like a bear, not like Fluttershy, the kind animal lover.

My Number Is My Address

An earlier version incorrectly described The Shining as having been transcribed from magical golden plates by Joseph Smith. It was actually Stephen King.
