"A Redondo Beach kayaker has posted a video on YouTube of an incredible encounter with a blue whale earlier this month.... He posted guidelines from the National Marine Fisheries Service, which note that a whale's behavior should not be interrupted because doing so can cause them to rapidly change direction or swim in an erratic pattern, which can have major consequences for any human-size creatures in the area." Which, uh, yeah.

Monica DeAngelis, a marine mammal biologist with the NOAA Fisheries Service told Thomas: "These are wild and powerful animals. One move of a flipper or the whale's fluke and this person could have been seriously hurt."
(She said because she was totally fucking jealous)
Awesomely terrifying.
Susie's nowhere in sight, eh?
This seems like a marginally appropriate place to report that, for the first time in 40 years, dolphins have been sighted in Peconic Bay (the body of water that separates Long Island's North and South Forks) and I can't decide whether that's really freaking cool, or a sign of the end times.
@cherrispryte: Maybe they're just visiting to support OWS.
@cherrispryte I think this is a completely appropriate spot to report on all marine activity witnessed by the Awl readers. (I choose to go with option A...really freaking cool.)
ps.....the frogs given to child for birthday last summer, still alive, still gross.
Whales: enormous, terrifying.
People: stupid, delicious to whales.
@DoctorDisaster Unless you taste like this guy.
'One move of a flipper or the whale's fluke and this person could have been seriously hurt.'
Mom would like to remind you to stay in your room with the door locked. It's dangerous out there!
