"In the country’s 102 largest metro areas, one in nine bridges is structurally deficient. That translates into more than 18,000 precarious structures. Americans drive over bridges in need of repair, replacement or maintenance about 210 million times daily, according to the report. In California alone, that translates into 396 people every second. Put another way, each day the volume of travelers who use deficient bridges in the United States far outnumbers the customers served by McDonald’s worldwide."

Before I have a debilitating ragestroke, can one of Obama's pals over at Harvard call him up and be all, "Hey Barry! Alastair from the Kennedy School here. How are things? Great, great, good. Listen, we've been talking and we'd like for you to look into something called the WPA. You've heard of it? Wonderful. Well, perhaps you'd like to brush up on some of the specifics? We could send you reading materials. What's your FedEx number?"

@jolie Yes.

@jolie

A charmingly logical unemployed metal worker who is occupying Wall Street was briefly interviewed on WNYC this morning, raising this very question.

@jolie It's true, the only thing keeping Congress from funding something like that (or anything else for that matter!) is that Obama hasn't proposed it yet.

Pfft, who cares? You don't need bridges if you've got a private helicopter.

Don't think of it as a danger, just pretend every trip over a bridge is a fun game of driving Russian Roulette!

While they're not as visible as bridges or roads, it's always fun to do a google news search for "water main" to really demonstrate our crumbling infrastructure. But good news! Republicans are trying to defund EPA water infrastructure programs!

Don't forget about the people walking under structurally deficient bridges. That makes the hamburger gap even wider.

@NotAndersonCooper

People should quit expecting to be coddled with bridges and learn to bootstrap their way across the water like Jesus did.

We all live in a murderous world, as the report from T4A has shown. Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried S— every day.

this may not be totally accurate, but my father works for a transportation department and he told me once that counties and cities are responsible for maintaining bridges and roads, but that state and federal funds are used to create new ones and repair the structurally deficient. they fall into disrepair (not really, just below the technical standards) so that they will have access to better funding.

As someone who designs and builds infrastructure, I endorse this product and/or service.
