"Are bears really soft? Not compared to other mammals. Brown bears like Charmin's Leonard do possess a thick pelt and an ample (though seasonal) layer of subcutaneous fat. Still, the softness of an animal is generally thought to depend upon the density and composition of its fur—and according to these metrics, bears are middling at best…. Mammals tend to have two kinds of body hair: long, coarse guard hairs and short, downy wool hairs. The fur of a brown bear or polar bear is about two-thirds the latter."
—This explanation of what bears have to do with toilet paper marketing never once mentions the inevitability of their defecating in a forest, but no matter, there are important bear facts within.

My impression of the Charmin ad campaign was that it used bears not as a stand-in for the softness of the tissue, but to demonstrate its strength. The endgame of all those bears-going-to-the-bathroom commercials is that less stray pieces of Charmin toilet paper are left on the bear's furry bottom than other brands. This makes the relatively coarse-furred bear a more than suitable spokesanimal for Charmin, precisely because of its lack of softness.

@boyofdestiny The cling-ons on the back of the bears is just disgusting.

@boyofdestiny I thought they used bears because we're all gonna be that fat in twenty years.

I switched to Papal Luxury® brand toilet paper.

Does a bear shit in the woods? Of course it does. Say what you will about the Charmin spots, but I believe it's the ONLY toilet paper advertising in the U.S. that actually references what the paper is used for.

Then again, Mr. Whipple never looked particularly soft either.

The Charmin "Enjoy the Go" ad campaign also asks you to #tweetfromtheseat and other weird exhibitionist stuff. Charmin's social media people tweet "in role" as bears. It be the world's first scat furry marketing campaign.
