"Yes, I'm Familiar with Your Scene": The New Destroyer Video

New today, in colonial sound and vision, the video for Destroyer's "Savage Night at the Opera." (Toronto, so much to answer for!)

I didn't like the song at all until I watched the video. Odd how that works.

Toronto?

djfreshie (#875)

Vancouver maybe, but there is nothing in that video that is Toronto. I don't understand.

LondonLee (#922)

Am I missing something? That was very boring.

@LondonLee You may have missed the part where that entitled ass ran six red lights in a row. I may not speak Canuck, but I am pretty sure a red light, is a red light, is a red light.

@LondonLee : From watching it once (or rather, seeing the first 30 seconds and then fast-forwarding to the end), I can fill in the backstory. This video is an absolutely pointless rip-off of a film it's not fit to namedrop: the classic 1976 short "C'était un rendez-vous".

@theheckle : The fact that the most lawbreaking in this "remake" is running a couple of red lights makes it all the more lame. Go check out the original — it's on Youtube, and it's still nailbitingly thrilling (down the wrong way on scary Parisian one-way streets! On the sidewalk! Through blind alleys at 90+ miles per hour!).

Well spotted, Gef!

@joeclark : cdarville, below, has a link to the original. Excellent!

I looked up.
I looked around.
A famous Toronto painter shot me down.
"Oh, I've busted my ass on these streets too long," he said.
I set fire to the bed and tore his gown…

Vancouver so often stands in for other places that it may look generically familiar. Although — why would we impersonate Toronto? We aim higher in our insecure quest to be a 'world class city'.

For anybody who's interested, here is the inspiration for the video:

@cdarville : You beat me to it by one minute (see above). But seriously, if you're going to be derivative of one of the greatest illegal race films ever, don't be super lame. CANADA FAIL.

cdarville (#4,772)

@Gef the Talking Mongoose I completely agree with you that the original is, indeed, still heart-stoppingly thrilling. I really like Destroyer but this video kinda pissed me off – if such strong source material is going to be so conspicuously referenced, then really go for it, right?

Ok, I've officially invested too much time thinking about this. Everybody, get back to work!

I dearly, dearly love this band, particularly the singer's voice.
