Instant Message is Bad for Society

• "Most gay person I’ve ever seen." —Dharun Ravi.

• "His (family) is sooo indian/ first gen americanish . . . just like . . . first son off to college . . . his rents defs owna dunkin (donuts)." —Tyler Clementi.

New docs in the Tyler Clementi Rutgers suicide case reveal that everyone sits around and gossips on IM about each other. (Some more literately than others.) Why can't an Indian dude and a white gay dude in a dorm room get along? Ugh.

Help us David Cameron! You're our only hope! Ban this perfidious "instantaneous messaging" before it ruins us all!

I can't help but feel like this headline is an implicit warning that you do not appreciate my Gchat banter. It has failed. My IMs will NOT BE DETERRED!

I went to the gayest liberal arts school on the East Coast and what did I walk in on my first day in the dorms? A CRUCIFIX ON THE WALL.

Details on how I made it work via IM.

You buried the lede:
"Clementi told a friend he was not too bothered when he first learned his roommate had briefly turned on the webcam and saw him kissing another man. "When I first read the tweet I defs felt violated/ But then/ When I remembered what actually happened … / Idk… /Doesn’t seem soooo bad lol," Clementi wrote in a Sept. 20 chat with a friend."

and then

Clementi told his family he was gay shortly before leaving for college and received a mixed reaction from his parents. "It’s a good thing dad is ok w/it or I would be in serious trouble/ mom has basically completely rejected me," Clementi wrote in another instant messaging chat with a friend.

If it weren't for Instant Messaging, would Chris Hanson still have a job?

When homophobia meets classism, it's hard to know who to root for… Certainly NOT the gawd-awful commenters from nj.com!
