"In the punishing heat of a July afternoon, dresses are 'the ultimate in comfort'"

So how sure are we that the Times piece on dresses isn't actually an Onion article? http://nyti.ms/pRxy8qThu Jul 21 14:44:38 via web

Um, not at all sure. "Younger women, who once adopted the dress as a cheeky send up of mid-20th century feminine stereotypes, are now dispensing with such ironies and acknowledging the frankly sensual appeal of the dress." WHAT IS GOING ON.

AHHH ELIZABETH WURTZEL SIGHTING

@jfruh : I got $20 that says at least one of those three girls in the photo is into ironic roller derby.

@jfruh That was the only good part!

KL (#18,240)

@jfruh Actually, I'm pretty sure the redhead is/was a Suicide Girl, and I also thought she was Canadian.

allyzay (#321)

@KL NONE of those girls are from New York, are you fucking kidding me, so she probably is your Canadian Suicide Girl.

"They like the cool comfort of summer dresses, generally."

(did I do it right? so concerned)

Jasmine (#8)

@Gef the Talking Mongoose It makes me wonder two things: "What editor thought this was a good idea?" or, conversely, "Must have been one hell of a pitch."

@Jasmine : I eagerly await the Times's take on the cool comfort us dudes ironically enjoy. Also: holy crap is it gross outside right now.

Personally I think it's cool that the NYT is taking story ideas direct from strained conversations I have with coworkers.

All this time I've been wearing dresses "ironically" without even knowing it! Also, "Hazel Honeysuckle"? No. Not allowed.

@Lindsay Robertson I've never wanted to punch a name before, but now I do.

I thought we had already established that everything in Thursday Styles is designed to target a particular demographic of readers that marketers refer to as "rich women dumber than a box of of cat hair"?

ejcsanfran (#489)

“When I wear it, I feel youthful, ready to move, ready to laugh, ready to be spontaneous.”

So instead of drinking a bottle of wine when I get home, I can get the same effect by wearing a dress? Sure, I'll give it a try!

@ejcsanfran That quote can be taken out and recycled when 65 year old Madonna finally does a Depends ad.

rebeccakp (#16,182)

What's with the names of the three girls in the picture? Did the NY Times poach them from a 1950's comic strip? Hazel Honeysuckle, you guys!

Glad they're not styling themselves ironically or anything.

allyzay (#321)

@rebeccakp I mean, as soon as I read the caption, before even getting to the story, I was infuriated so maybe they just really knew what they were doing here (I assume NYT's purpose is to piss me off).

deepomega (#1,720)

In the Gray Lady's defense, I had no idea that women wore dresses.

@deepomega I had no idea that dresses could be adopted. And all the money I wasted on unsuccessful in vitro treatments!

La Cieca (#1,110)

This story actually sounds like good journalism if you make the simple assumption that the people quoted are genetic male crossdressers, and that "Hazel Honeysuckle" et. al. are their femme names.

Sarah Girner, a photographer, 33, discovered dresses at 16, when she said that she was “at the threshold of becoming a woman.” She said she has been captivated ever since by the “grace and elegance inherent a dress, the way it flows and moves.” [Sarah, who answers to "Sam" to his colleagues, prefers khaki slacks and stripey buttondowns when at his job as a foreman at one of Staten Island's largest concrete companies.]

@La Cieca While Bettina May is definitely a New Yorker poet:
“So much is tied up in a dress,
a lot of emotions and politics.”

Multiphasic (#411)

"Much like in the Vampire Weekend song 'Earrings,' stylish women these days are wearing earrings," says 17-year-old fashion blogger Katherine Scott, sitting on the balcony of her 78th-floor Upper East Side bungalow. "It really calls attention to your earlobes. I've heard they do it in Williamsburg, now, too."

On the other side of the river, 29-year-old graphic designer Casey Morris also wears earrings—only with a twist.
