"Decades of research confirm that summer learning loss is real."
—"Jeff Smink is the vice president for policy for the National Summer Learning Association."

Sorry, I had trouble reading that.
Im going to lay down over here and smoke some cigarettes.
Um, but decades of research really do show that summer learning loss is real!
I doubt it's really THE MOST IMPORTANT cause of underachievement in school though.
@Sean Lai
The disparity between "low-income" and "high-income" kids in summer learning loss definitely PROVES that it is the most important cause of underachievement. It does not prove anything else AT ALL!
"the learning loss is cumulative…"
does this mean that once we don't learn something then we will never be able to learn that thing at any time in the future? i hope my hologram self understands this because i sure don't.
@roboloki: Or what you didn't learn in summer n plus what you didn't learn in summer n+1 plus what you didn't learn in summer n+2 . . . God I feel stupid all the sudden.
For what it's worth, studies show that one of the best things to stop summer learning loss is summer camp. So we should be signing up underprivileged kids for canoeing and archery left and right!
@Sean Lai
But then, how will we measure the OUTCOMES?????????????!
After working for a few years in summer programs, I pretty much gave up all hope when I asked a student of mine why he didn't do too well in a class that we had prepped him for. His response was something along the lines of, "I think I did well here because you guys want me to do well, no one really cares in my regular school." I died a little bit.
@armagnacforbreakfast Oof.
@Setec Astrology Double oof.
Even if we could secure funds for summer learning programs — and that's a mighty big IF — it just wouldn't matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk because they've got all the money!
Just go to year round schools and save parents the trouble of finding day care in the summer.
"Where did you go to summer school?"
@hman: "Where do you summer school?"
"Smink"
I can't remember my Expedia password. Damn summer learning loss.
