Legislation calling for a "long-form birth certificate" (whatever that is), or any calls for a certain type of birth certificate, can have the unintended consequence of blocking adoptees from political office. The type of birth certificate and access to original birth certificates for adoptees varies by state and year of birth, but I can tell you mine wouldn't satisfy a birther. It's a legal document with a seal on it and everything but it doesn't say it's a birth certificate – it states that there IS a birth certificate on file in the state capital confirming that "mjfrombuffalo" was born in Buffalo on X Date. I've had problems using it to confirm citizenship for jobs, I generally have to bring the legal adoption papers with me to explain why my "birth certificate" does not look right.
