Nate Dogg, 1969-2011

Rap music lost one of its most recognizable voices last night, when Long Beach, California singer Nathaniel "Nate Dogg" Hale died after suffering two strokes in recent years. A childhood friend of Snoop Dogg, who first appeared on Dr. Dre's landmark 1992 album, The Chronic, Nate Dogg rose to his own fame alongside Dre's half-brother Warren G with the era-defining 1994 classic "Regulate." Nate's deep, mellifluous voice came to epitomize California gangsta rap's central victory: making tough, menacing, street music sound sweet and soothing to the ear. He was 41. Here are some of his greatest hits.

Oh No is top-ten all-everything. Just like Nate Dogg.

The funk might fracture your nose. Agreed.

How did he die?

God. That's embarrassing for me. The exact cause of death has not been announced, but he has been struggling to regain his health since suffering strokes in 2007 and 2008. I meant to include that and should have originally. Added now. Thanks, Gailpink.

"Ain't No Fun"

Yeah. 50's "21 Questions," too. You could make a full full-length album out of Nate's huge hits. He was major big-time.

One of the most important people in rap history and he wasn't even a rapper. The way people in their 50's listen to oldies like Bobby Womack and Curtis Mayfield is the way my generation will be listening to Nate Dogg and all the classic songs he gave his voice to. TIMELESS.

I'm actually really sad about this. *pouring out some virtual Henny in memoriam*

another great track of his is "Get Up" with Eve–I'd never heard it until my husband introduced me to it. & the "conversation & Hennessey" line in "Shake That" just kills me every time.

(not that I only like his newer stuff; obviously the early G-funk songs are fantastic.)

Gotta rep for "Can't Deny It"–I know, I know, Fabolous ain't that great, but Nate Dogg's chorus hook might be the best one of his career. It sure is my favorite.

Such a beautiful voice. "Regulate", ah me did you know even Jens Lekman mentions this song. Very very sad, was so shocked when he kept having more strokes.
