Okay, but why does that article say that she was raped? All we know is that she was, in the words of a CBS press release, "sexually assaulted" which is not the same as rape. Again, not trying to say that an awful thing didn't happen, just that as far as we know THAT awful thing didn't happen. A sexual assault (insert the 'not equals' symbol here) rape. What happened to reporting facts 'n shit?

Yeah, it should say assault throughout, I actually agree.

This could have been much shorter: "Shut your fucking face. No one needs to hear your opinion on every thing."

He gets at that, but not soon enough.

I think the buildup made the payoff even better, personally.

There are two more items on that list than I thought there would be.

We are at the dawn of a new era of "rape linkbait"

The attention to the topic is now far out-of-proportion to the impact of the actual incidents. You know what is also painful and traumatic and immoral? Getting stabbed and left for dead in an alley. WHERE IS OUR MORALITY POLICE ON THAT ONE?

This is such a non-argument at this point. We're all wasting our time obliging the fools who preach that intellectual cleansing should be on our agendas. For what, I don't know.

I hope someday to be DD;DR'ed. It sounds like a fun Japanese dancing game.

You do realize that a person is far more likely to be raped than stabbed and left for dead in an alley, right? (N.B. This might require you to acknowledge that "a person" can mean "a woman.")

But if people do what Scocca says, it'll be harder to tell who the real assholes are!

caw_caw (#5,641)

I get how people can not know who Arcade Fire is. But how can so many smart people (who seem to spend an awful lot of time on the internet!) not know to shut the holy hell up about things like this?
Gah.
Anyway. Glad for Scocca's post but wish it wasn't necessary.

bthny (#2,907)

They're not actually that smart to begin with, is my suspicion.

Yeah, I clicked thinking "who the fuck needs Slate to tell them to not be a total idiot?" not realising that there were so many people being such total idiots about this. What a bunch of idiots. Internet, you got a lot of mansplaining to do!
