Catching Up on the Worst Super Bowl Ads

Since the Super Bowl is invisible to me, I didn't see any of its fabled advertisements—including this ad for Groupon here, that has apparently enraged everyone everywhere, what with its fairly completely misplayed sarcasm and tonedeafness and offbase first world self-mockery. (On the upside: at least now "everyone" has heard of Groupon. I guess.) The rest of the crop are rounded up here; gosh I did not miss very much in consuming important brand-related information, did I!

I liked the Chrysler/Detroit/Eminem spot. It added something to the night. It's worth watching.

And if I weren't so hung over and old, I would provide a link to the ad…but HELL, YES….PACKERS WIN!!!!
(just in case someone mentions it to you Choire, now you know.)

Imagine how much better the Chrysler spot would've been with dancers wearing boxes on their heads.

Our Superbowl party's verdict on the Chrysler ad: "How is this both the most serious and the most hilarious ad of the night?"

BadUncle (#153)

Eminem crunchy-faced seriousness always cracks me up.

Give him a break, he's still mourning his brother.

I actually thought the NFL commercial with all the old TV shows was the best one of the evening. Probably because since I was already watching an NFL product I didn't feel bad about watching an ad for the NFL?

I had a feeling Buddy Lembeck was a Panthers fan.

Didn't anyone else like the old white guy prison one? I loved the old white guy prison one!

hockeymom (#143)

The Kenny G reference was my favorite part!

Bittersweet (#765)

Yes, this one, the Darth Vader one and the Chevy truck-as-Lassie one were my favorites.

crotchety (#594)

The Chevy ad with the old farts was great and the Coke Border Guards was one of the best.

Having to watch all that shit made me feel dumb, but I found it comforting to think how dumb the players must feel just standing around on the filed while I'm watching the commercials.

DoctorDisaster (#1,970)

Apparently, this year they had giant screens to play the commercials inside the stadium.

In case you need any confirmation what a backward, third world place it is up here, if something is broadcast in Canada and the US at the same time the Cdn. network will insert any old random Canadian ads in place of the big shiny American ones. So here in Halifax some of this famously expensive airtime would be filled by like an ad for a Harley-Davidson dealership in some Dartmouth strip mall, or a store in Bedford selling horseback riding gear.
We resorted to finding the 'real' ads on YouTube during the commercial breaks.
I liked the 'Delicatessen'esque Audi one.

This is dreamlike and wonderful. Do the local ads cater to the super bowl event at all? Like, Stan's Discount Pipe Fittings has a commercial set on a Canadian approximation of a football field? (A hockey rinks spray-painted green.)

Flashman (#418)

Well, they weren't all local mom n' pop ads, a bunch were the big-budget sort – Hyundai featured prominently, and Budweiser, and maybe in a bigger TV market like Toronto they'd all be the fancy ads.
But out here they just seemed to have too much space to fill, so we got the random local ones, or else just promos for lame pseudo-American CTV programs like 'Counterstrike.'

If Connie's suicide attempt had succeeded, none of this would have happened.

Oh, but then Groupon would've just made a commercial where Mary Tyler Moore brags about getting her bathroom tile regrouted for half price.

Clip Arthur (#2,024)

Who went pee-pee in Timothy Hutton’s Coke?

Would have been funnier if they took Groupon in Tibet.

La Cieca (#1,110)

The sound doesn't work on this computer, but judging from Hutton's appearance, I assume Groupon provides inexpensive facelifts?

You can get $30 worth of collagen injections in Tijuana for $15 with Groupon.

GailPink (#9,712)

That was embarassing to watch.
