Who Likes The Snow In New York? Tigers, Monkeys and Bears

So, that was January, 2011 in New York: 31 straight days with snow on the ground. Thirty-six total inches—a new all-time record for the month! And there's more to come as February gets started. I've been hearing a lot of complaining about it from humans. But you know who you don't hear complaining about it? Tigers. Or monkeys.

Or bears.

They all seem like they're really enjoying the snow. When the tiger cub hides in ambush from its mother, and then springs out and startles her, but she's sort of like, "Aww, come here, you!" and paws him into the snow, and then gives him a little love nip on the nape of its neck? Or when the bear rolls onto its back to make a snow angel? Or the when the grown-up monkey teaches the baby monkey to make snowballs? (Seemingly to eat, but also maybe to throw at fancy cars on Park Avenue when the cameras aren't rolling.) They really seem to have a better attitude about the winter weather than most of us here in the city.

And you don't see any of them wearing duck boots.

At least three Awl fans complimented my duck boots this weekend. Just sayin'.

Ha! Yeah. I know I've staked out an unpopular position on this matter. I don't even think that they're particularly unattractive boots. (I have owned many pairs myself in my time.) They just strike me as an oddly rural item to see so ubiquitously in New York. And mostly, I'm just teasing.

Oh, I appreciate a good duck boot-based ribbing.

Chicago's supposed to get 22 inches tomorrow. I have no sympathy for you East Coasters.

Chicago sure talks a lot of smack for a city that gets less annual snowfall than Boston.
