When I was little, I thought he was God. Not in any sort of divine way; I just assumed that any nice sort of God-type being would look a lot like Mr. Cunningham. Looking back, I see no problem with this logic, other than the god part.
In keeping with the theme, some comedian–I think it was Bobcat Goldthwait–once described his vision of God as being like Hugh Beaumont from "Leave It To Beaver."
