The Why We Jump Now

Some see opportunityWe are a resourceful bunch here in town: "In fact, according to statistics from from city health officials and the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, more than one out of seven jumper suicides nationally between 1999 and 2007 (the most distant and recent years that national data is available) happened in New York City…. Since New York has less handguns and rifles per capita than other parts of the country, [Ann Haas, the director of suicide-prevention projects for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention] said, people bent on suicide in the city find other means, often jumping."

I wonder where NYC ranks in subway deaths. Higher then woodchippers?

saythatscool (#101)

I see this as a positive statistic for New York. The Board of Tourism needs to seize on this and come up with a good slogan calling for would-be-suiciders to come spend their last dollars in Gotham before they jump.

Just spitballing here, but howzabout something like "Take the NYC plunge!"

Or "New York, Where Necessity Is the Mother of Invention."

@Screen: 6 stories? Elevate it harder. This is Trumpville you're talking about!

@ArtYucko Was on 40th. Landed on the 34th floor terrace. In a minute I'll jump again.

WTC DIDN'T NEED NO TERRORACES.

Rollo (#3,202)

One-way fares to NYC just dropped!

Mid-Atlantic/lower New England specific: New York: just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

It's all about the supply and demand of concentrating kinetic energy.

Yeah, but the other 6 were all off of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Remember how gulf fishermen were taking out life insurance policies and blowing their heads off so their families could collect? Maybe we can get one of these jumpers to get a url address printed or tattooed somewhere…

New York City advertising!

HiredGoons (#603)

make due.

I assume they're referring only to successful suicide attempts. There are more jumpers per capita in, say, Ottumwa, Iowa, BUT THE BUILDINGS JUST AREN'T TALL ENOUGH!

PS. I'm going to call the next skyscraper I build "Lethal Means."

PPS. I read through NYC coroner's reports from the 1830's and the most popular way to commit suicide was jumping into a well.

I'm just saying, I think the jumping habit may be ingrained in the population.

Aloysius (#1,808)

Plus you off a building in Iowa odds are you'll land on something soft–corn, horses, fat people. In New York it's all cement and metal.

deepomega (#1,720)

And fat tourists.

petejayhawk (#1,249)

A sad post, considering the news out of Kansas.
