"'It appears to me that more people are sitting in cafes smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee than working out … the French don't see fitness as a lifestyle,' says American-born fitness consultant Fred Hoffman, who has lived in Paris for 21 years."
-Uh, GOOD FOR THEM. Drinking and smoking is a lifestyle. Going to the gym is a sick kind of narcissism that even a people as self-regarding as the French recognize as a step to far. I salute you, you Gauloises-smoking, Calvados-guzzling bastards!

They get their exercise at self-defense class. They have to run up to 10 miles sometimes to get away.

There are Parisians and then there are the French, and the two are related sets similar to New Yorkers and Americans.

Mais oui, but they all smoke like chimneys and guzzle all grape-sourced products with the kind of absolute impunity only they can muster. Also, Gauloises kind of over. Mostly American brands now.

I loves me some Calvados. Now I have to pick some up on my way home.

Wonder how this guy managed to make a living for 21 years in Paris, then. Fitness Consultant/Bartender? FC/Smuggler of Illegal Aliens?

I like to have a few Lillet's in the afternoon along with my smokes.

"a step to far"?

That made my skin crawl but I didn't want to be the jerk who pointed it out. So, thanks :).
