Howard Jacobson (a personal favorite) is among the six writers to make the shortlist for this year's Man Booker prize. The others are Emma Donoghue, Damon Galgut, Andrea Levy, Peter Carey and Tom McCarthy.

Peter Carey, Peter Carey. On the other hand, I haven't read any of the others, cultural idiot that I am.

I'm a little stunned David Mitchell's new novel did not make the cut. I'm nearly finished with it, and think it is at the very least better than McCarthy's.
