Coheed and Cambria Covers The Smiths (What?)

In a move that is probably due to the Large Hadron Collider making everyone in the world insane because of neutrinos and what not, Coheed and Cambria, the prog-rock band that mostly writes about spaceships and evil alien empires, covered The Smiths-they did a cover of "A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours," off The Smiths' last album Strangeways, Here We Come. The cover isn't terrible, but it does have that nagging "fantasy rock" sound that seems to accompany a lot of the band's music lately. But if you can get past the goblins and trolls vibe, it's pretty neat. And if you haven't heard anything coming out of the AV Club's Undercover series you definitely should.

This is nothing compared to their whole Fleetwood Mac cover album.

Ho! Elfin bards! Yes, way too ren-fair. Which I guess is the same as the "fantasy rock" sound. (Colin Meloy should watch this as reminder to say no to his worse instincts.) Also, either Coheed or Cambria looks like a tattoo of Adam Duritz I saw once.

pass me a turkey-leg, m'lord!

Actually, Coheed and Cambria are the parents of Claudio, the singer. Or, well, that's what the comic books say.

[In reality the band is named after two small towns, one in Jersey and one in PA.]

I'm pretty sure it has to do with dope.

Is It Really So Strange?

Jim Rome called Blink 182 'punk rockers' on more than one occasion, back in the late 90's.

roboloki (#1,724)

punks, yes. rockers, no.

Art Yucko (#1,321)

Chipmunks, definitely.

Yeah, but he let them run naked through his studio in that one video where they're naked the whole time.
He feigned disgust at the sight of naked skinny tatted rock boys.

Art Yucko (#1,321)

yeah once you switched over to the radio, the interrfeignum didn't last long

My favourite a/v cover was Wye Oak doing the Kinks. Worth checking out if you like either of those bands, or if you like good music. Or if you like music in general.

Shouldn't you have to get a license or pass a test or appear before a Congressional subcommittee before you are allowed to cover some bands?

The Smiths, I believe, are one such band.

Goddamned Reagan-Era Deregulation. This is the direct result.

AOL Sessions Under Cover was pretty good for this sort of thing, if you were of the emo/pop-punk set. Of course, the main page doesn't exist any more, but all the individual videos are scattered about. Here's Circa Survive doing "Wish You Were Here" (and doing it better than The Antlers on the AV site, imho.)

Morrissey's tongue-at-least-somewhat-in-cheek tone is definitely essential when trying to pull of songs like this.

i'd like to hear robert davi cover "closer"

I definitely love pretty much everything Coheed And Cambria have ever done, but even I wasn't expecting anything good from this idea. And yet, I totally love this. In fact, since it's one of my least favorite Smiths songs, I might like this even better than the original.
