Did You Feel The Earthquake?
A rare earthquake, measuring magnitude-5.5, struck at the Ontario-Quebec border region of Canada on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The midday quake was felt in the city of Toronto in Canada and in a number of U.S. states, including Michigan, Vermont and New York.
This article notes that tremors were felt in Brooklyn (Twitter produced claims of rattled parrots), but I don't buy it. (I'm not saying Brooklyn doesn't DESERVE an earthquake, I'm just saying that this one wasn't it.) I guess if we want a real natural disaster we will just have to wait until the oil makes its way up here.

Toronto's whole Twitter community has turned into a bunch of babies with their "OMG Earthquake!" updates, before moving on to making earthquake related jokes involving G20, Maple Leafs and Lady Gaga.
/Kill me.
Ha! Toronto's Twitter community are a bunch of childish babies. As opposed to Vancouver or Hali's twitter community, who are clearly grownup scientist geniuses all sharing seismic graphs and writing acrostic poetry.
Anyways, as long as we're still referring to the fake lake as Lake Waste-a-ma Taxes, I'm very okay with it.
And Toronto doesn't ever de al with natural disasters so feeling my building shake and sway and evacuating myself was an exciting good time!
Hali has a 'twitter community'?!
Yeah. I call bullshit, too. Unless they produce a nonhysterical person who goes on record saying they felt it — and preferably someone who's been through an earthquake — I ain't buying it.
i felt it. sitting here, working from home, watching some world cup… started to shake in my chair, which is a very comfy chair by the way… Not much else was shaking around my condo, so i wasn't really sure what was going on. I checked my pulse to make sure i wasn't having some kind of random "episode". looked out the window, saw nothing untoward, shrugged and returned to "working from home and cowering from the anarchists".
I felt it too – in Greenpoint. Undeniably strong to the point that I panicked for a second and thought my building was going to implode. I'm on the fifth floor in new construction, though, so maybe that made all the difference.
My IM from 1:45pm
me: whoa
our apartment
just shook
am i going crazy? i swear – i just felt an earthquake or something is gong wrong w/our apt!
I was so panicked, in fact, I typed "gong" instead of "going"
Last time this happenened…er 7? years ago, I was in Long Island City and was woken by a very loud boom and a shudder. Similarly startling to but overall dissimilar experiences from the general California or Japan quakes (as I've experienced them). I choose to believe we are doomed.
Why the hell is theawl forcing me to accidentally post these from my facebook account? No matter. I wasn't as lucid here as my fake real person generally is anyway.
Pfft. 5.5? Hundreds of miles away? Bullshit.
Just to be safe, I'm texting 'markowitz' to 90999.
Take heart, New York City earthquake survivors!

That is all.
There's this one at least:
Someone make a hipster joke, quick!
when dov charney farts in Montreal, Toronto quakes.
Yes!
I now measure earthquakes by Facebook response. If I see a status update in San Diego about an earthquake I wait to see something from LA friends. If not, then I don't bother calling my San Diego relatives.
It was my very first earthquake! I was napping and the bed started shaking. I assumed, naturally, that this was the end of times and starting cursing the sodomites and such but then it stopped and I decided that the gays are okay again.
My dad's hospital in VT shook a wee bit.
it was a wee 1, i thought it was my grandson, and father walking too hard across my apartment floors. but yes its a shocker. here in syr ny. id never thought in my life time.theres always a first so y not. ive seen afew now.
are you my Auntie Jan, by any chance?
I felt it in Detroit, but I just figured it was Kwame Kilpatrick hitting the floor: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/24003605/detail.html#story
I'm in Montréal, and the Earth did not move for me.
From the chicago tribune:
Quade and her daughter — who believe their building is on a fault line — said they felt the tremor at about 12:50 p.m.
How do you find out if your bldg is on a fault line?
You believe!
i called 911 to report it. they told me to go fuck myself. so i did.
Did you use anything artificial, or was it 'all you' ?
I thought the demolition crew the floor above had found one last cart of lath to haul.
I was getting a mani-pedi in Brooklyn and because it is flawless, I call BS on those rattled parrots.
I experienced the Loma Prieta quake in '89. Anything below 6.0 might as well be a squirrel fart.
And by "experienced", I mean "was on the roof of a 3 story building in Berkeley".
I have read that it was even felt in Staten Island. I had no idea that
ANYTHING was ever felt in Staten Island.
BTW my cat just LOVES Ritz crackers.
My chair vibrated here in Cambridge, MA.
