12 Stevie Nicks Lyrics in Order of Their Profundity

Happy Birthday, Stevie!12. The clouds never expect it when it rains,
But the sea changes colors,
but the sea does not change.

-"Edge of Seventeen"

11. The loneliness of a one night stand is hard to take
We all chase something and maybe this is a dream
The timeless face of a rock and roll woman while her heart breaks
Oh you know the dream keeps coming even when you forget to feel.

-"After The Glitter Fades"

10. You can ride high atop your pony, I know you won't fall
'Cause the whole thing's phony.

-"Bella Donna"

9. Heartbreak of the moment is not endless.
-"Think About It"

8. And the summer became the fall
I was not ready for the winter
It makes no difference at all
'Cause I wear boots all summer long

My eye make up is dark and it's careless
Some circles around my eyes
Sometimes the real color of my skin
Is my eyes without any shadow.

7. And he says, "What do you love to do?
Outside your world,
Who spends time with you?
Whom do you love when you're not working?"

-"Sweet Girl"

6. She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness

5. Run around like a spirit in flight
Fearlessness is fearlessness
I will not forget this night

-"Wild Heart"

4. I'll follow you down til the sound of my voice will haunt you.
-"Silver Springs"

3. Races are run
Some people win
Some people always have to lose.

-"Races Are Run"

2. She was that kind of lady
Times were hard
But she could come curling 'round you
Like fingers.

- "Crying In The Night"

1. So I close my eyes softly
Til I become that part of the wind
That we all long for sometimes.
And to those that I love
Like a ghost through a fog
Like a charmed hour
And a haunted song
And the angel of my dreams.

Jim Behrle (#3,292)

Each time she sings the "I'm getting older, too" in "Landslide" I find it more and more poignant

deepomega (#1,720)

I've never really heard any Stevie Nicks solo recordings. But I'm guessing she just rips off Lady Gaga.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

@deepo: If you back your car over a sheep it's the same experience.

Multiphasic (#411)

@scrolly …and that's the omitted #13 most profound Nicks lyric.

How could you omit:

"Stand back
Stand back
In the middle of my room I did not hear from you
It's alright it's alright
To be standin' in a line
To be standin' in a line
I would cry"

So profound.

saythatscool (#101)

I disagree. Even profounderer…

"…straight outta Compton
is a brotha that'll smother yo' mother
and make ya sister think I love her
Dangerous motherfucker raises hell
And if I ever get caught I make bail
See, I don't give a fuck, that's the problem
I see a motherfuckin cop I don't dodge him
But I'm smart, lay low, creep a while
And when I see a punk pass, I smile
To me it's kinda funny, the attitude showin a nigga drivin
but don't know where the fuck he's going, just rollin
lookin for the one they call Eazy
But here's a flash, they never seize me."

I never knew Ms. Nicks collaborated with NWA. A marked step up from Tom Petty.

saythatscool (#101)

'Twas profunkadelic, your Honor.

scroll_lock (#4,122)

Cocaine kept me thin and crazed
Klonopin put me in a daze
Then made me Ann Wilson huge
I boned Mick Fleetwood but not the Nuge,
Doesn't Lindsey Buckingham have crazy eyes?

-"Rehab and Stretch Marks"

Andy Rosenberger (#3,872)

I personally feel this is an example of how Emily Gould is destroying the capacity for intelligent thought on the internet one listicle at a time. But don't worry, I mean this isn't personal; I'm not accusing her (or anyone) of being a bad person.

But in all seriousness, I've only recently realized that not everyone obsesses over 6/11ths of Rumours like I do. Apparently the good Fleetwood Mac fan has branched out.

cherrispryte (#444)

I also heard last night that Emily Gould kills puppies. So you should blame her for that, too.

Dave Bry (#422)

"Rulers make bad lovers/Better put your kingdom up for sale." This list should be written in Bic erasable-ink pen on the always too-pliant vinyl cover of a Trapper Keeper. And many happy returns to the greatest witchy woman rock has ever known.

Did you just reference The Eagles? Yech.

Dave Bry (#422)

Ha! Yes, yech, I guess I just did. But I have made my peace with the Eagles. As despicable in so many ways as they are. "Those Shoes" and "Victim of Love" are songs I can listen to again and again. Cocaine made some great music, along with the bad.

It is, as they say, a hell of a drug.

BadUncle (#153)

reading these, I just want drop my pants and sit on an enormous wedge of Bolivia's finest.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

Thunder only happens when it's raining!

BadUncle (#153)

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

When the rain washès you clean you'll know.

Charlie (#4,250)

god how i love camper van beethoven's version of that record.

Unc, do you need a roadie with a long straw? I'm your girl.

earlydinner (#1,816)

I don't really know if that qualifies as content, per se…

earlydinner (#1,816)

I don't really know if this qualifies as content, per se…

earlydinner (#1,816)

also i don't know how to work computer, apparently.

SourCapote (#4,872)

Video Professor that shit!

Pintonator (#2,236)

"When you build your house
Then call me home."

"Something in you brought out something in me, that I've never been since."

Helman (#209)

Oh, oh, yes! Sara!

"Brown hair
in a sea of love
where everyone
would love to drown."

Can get me misty on a bad day, that song.

@Helman I know I'm almost a year late on this, but: Oh, honey.

LondonLee (#922)

Still not as, um, profound as her drawings

saythatscool (#101)

Oh dear lord.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

Stop "dragon" my heart around!

hockeymom (#143)

Not on the list:

"Give to me your leather
Take from me, my lace."

shostakobitch (#1,692)

Also not on the list:

"I keep my visions to myself."

Wrapitup (#975)

I heard that her music comes from a profound place of loss and pain from breaking up with some guy many years ago. Is that true? Anyhoo, I hope she has opened her heart to the wisdom of the universe and let the healing begin.

saythatscool (#101)

I have always been more of a McVieist.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

The legendary Christine Negative:

"I don't know how love will survive…"
"Don't stop thinking about tomorrow…"
"I guess I'm not as strong as I used to be…"
"I can't count the cost…"
"Oh no, no you can't disguise…"

LondonLee (#922)

There's always Christine McPositive:

"Sweet, wonderful you,
You make me happy with the things you do"

She's always been my fave Mac too.

dntsqzthchrmn (#2,893)

"Don't, don't break the spell…"

KarenUhOh (#19)

What makes you think I'm the one
Who will love you forever?
Everything you do has been done
And this won't last forever

Brad Nelson (#2,115)

Mick Fleetwood's drums on that song are enormous.

Meanwhile Lindsey Buckingham is my hero.

semiserious (#2,430)

All I know is that I love this Eli Escobar remix of "Stand Back" and even that Deep Dish remix of "Dreams" and would fully support a Betty White-style Facebook campaign to get Stevie Nicks to record a dance album.

Brad Nelson (#2,115)

I submit "Storms":

Every night that goes between
I feel a little less…

So I try to say
Goodbye my friend
I'd like to leave you with something warm
But never have I been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm

Brad Nelson (#2,115)

Also "Thrown Down," which plays fast and loose with first, second and third person, and is all the more powerful for it.

You can sit outside his door and wait
Well, you can dedicate your pain to him

chascates (#470)

Lyrics?!? You're supposed to be high when you're listening to music.

LondonLee (#922)

Or when you're writing it, as Stevie's lyrics prove.

Kevin Knox (#4,475)

I think I have met my match
He was singing, and undoing the laces

Flashman (#418)

Have you guys seen this?:
It's a 1970s video of Stevie Nicks breaking into song while getting made up for a photo shoot, and it's completely fantastic and wonderful.

Kevin Knox (#4,475)

Oh, thank you. That was great.

Helman (#209)

Magister (#1,444)

Late one night back in the 80s, I dropped some acid and was wandering around campus, when I spotted a vision laying in the grass looking up at a tree. As I drew closer, I could see that she was transfixed on an owl and though I was impaired, I had the distinct impression that the beautiful goddess was Miss Nicks, who was scheduled to play the local arena the next night.

Needless to say, I laid down beside her and though no words were exchanged and neither of us acknowledged the other's presence, we were motionless for what seemed like an hour watching the bird and forever after, that became known as the night that I may have communed with Stevie Nicks.

Jonathan Pierce (#5,622)

Dang. That sounds like a trip. Ooo. I submit
Well I believe that love is a living thing
Born into our destinies
From a single moment of inspiration
And as it grows
It changes our lives forever
~If I Were You

And for the person who submitted that one about the guy that broke her heart. Are you talking about that guy David Coffin on Myspace? Cause that guy can tell a story. Real or not, they are very entertaining.. stuff about her twirling around on one platform boot on a bar floor wet with beer, and something about the way her eyes look in the moonlight, and a ring he gave her. Sounds kinda like the Magister's story above. He's a trip!
