"Money's the bitch that never sleeps. And she's jealous."
-One of the Gordon Gekko quotes from Oliver Stone's long-simmering Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which premiered this morning in Cannes. It seems to lack the punch of "Greed is good," doesn't it? (Other bon mots de Gekko: "You're all pretty much fucked"; "While I was away, it seemed like greed got greedier." Oh-ho, a sequel line! Eh.) The movie apparently has Shia LeBoeuf as the kid enticed to work for a "Goldman Sachs-like firm" who might one day have Gordon as a father-in-law; there is also a cameo by Vanity Fair head guy Graydon Carter, which I am going to take as a test of New York media's penchant for self-regard on the part of Stone. (Is it falling for a trap if you express your awareness of it?)

Cameron Douglas was set for a small role but Max Factor does not produce enough pancake makeup to cover shackles. Also, Edith Head couldn't cut an orange jumpsuit on the bias.
Wasn't his defense that his dad had TOO MUCH money for him to have a normal childhood so he was forced to sell meth?
@crant: It's a heartbreaking tale. How could his father go and be RICH and FORCE his child into a life of drugdealing?!
Watching the original leaves me, as a Young, feeling confused. Were businessmen in the 80s actually this much of a caricature of capitalists? Or was it just poorly scripted? Why is it that Gecko's plan seems to be "lie until you are caught and then stop talking to the guy you lied to"? That's not a scheme! That's some entry-level villainry!
Everyone in the 80's was a caricature.
Try "American Psycho" for your 80's caricature extravaganza.
Or anything by Tom Wolfe.
WARNING: Reading involved.
This is more or less because the 80's was entry-level postmodern culture.
Are you sure he didn't say "Money, in a word (long pause)...is the bitch that never sleeps. And she's, in a word (long pause)...jealous."?
What, no painfully obvious Ponzi guy character named Paidoff?
Remember when Oliver Stone used to not be a hack?
Um ... no?
Trick question.
I give him 'Natural Born Killers' and the script for 'Midnight Express.'
I almost threw up from the cinematography of 'Any Given Sunday'
and maybe 'Platoon.'
Only thing I've ever really liked by him was JFK - which is amazing just in a postmodern storytelling kinda way!
It's EXTREMELY revisionist, though.
Shut up, Any Given Sunday is the best!!!!!!!!
(What's cinematography?)
Salvador!
I cant believe Im doing this in public but 'Salvador' and 'JFK,' even?
There was a lot of big dick flying around in that, so ... Yes.
Kevin Bacon's best role ever.
@HG - exactly! I read an interview where he said he wanted to write a "counter-myth" to the "myth" of the Warren Commission report. Which is lame from a historical accuracy standpoint, but is awesome metafiction.
Gah that was supposed to be a reply
for me the 'myth' was Kevin Costner's Southern Accent.
Nouriel Roubini has a came. He plays -- you guessed it -- "Dr. Doom."
Uhm. came = cameo.
