Am I the only person that gets really sad about reunion tours like this one, and say, My Bloody Valentine/Pixies/etc? They all just seem kind of pathetic, what with older, fatter versions of once-great rockstars spitting out the same old songs from x decade(s) ago.
I am all for bands that became "important" but didn't make much money coming back 10, 15, 20 whatever years later and cashing in with a tour. Might as well be them selling tickets at the expense of the current jackasses standing on their shoulders. Those jackasses, if they become "important" enough, will have the opportunity to get paid in 15 years anyway.
I think this too. If there's no artistic reason for getting the band back together, the reasons must be purely commercial. And as bad as they are, at least the Stones produce new records.
I think even NMH getting back for a tour would cheapen the goodness of their past exploits. The ephemeral nature of so much "relevant" music is what makes it relevant. Consider The Strokes' Is This It : if they had broken up right after this album came out, I'm guessing they'd still be the stuff of legend. Instead, their new, shitty albums have made even their good first one less "cool."
Well, the Libertines did break up after the second record, and their music is no more significant for that fact. Just a handful of good singles for the club, and the template for "continuous tabloid trainwreck" that opened a path for Amy Winehouse.
I saw the Pixies in 1988 and at the Jones Beach show (2006?). The latter was in many ways better than the '88 show. Depending on the catalog of the band in question, you might look at the list and think it's not hit pandering or overt nostalgia. Tho I have to say I winced when I saw 'Cut Your Hair' closing the show. And Spit on a Stranger? I dunno. I feel like Pavement has a Replacements sort of problem. The earliest work is pretty distinct -- formally -- and either exhaustion from over-performing or just not liking 'the early stuff' means you only get Box Elder. Pavement after Wowee Zowee is almost liking a different band. And it's a band I admit I like much less.
I was too young to know them when they first came out, so I know Malkmus as an increasingly irrelevant songster whose solo albums get press only because he used to be in Pavement. So my perspective is that he's aready been cashing out for a long time, and un-"earned it" with the years. #butthatsjustme
But who will serve the drinks at Great Jones?

Just, for the love of god, no new albums.

I would take exception to Neutral Milk Hotel.
But yes, Frank Black is not a pretty man to look at these days - but I went. I went.

I'm pretty sure they actually wrote out the set list in '94. But I've gotten lazier too, so I don't mind so much.
This is very exciting!
It's hard to settle down. If I could settle down, then I would settle down.
School's out! What did you expect?
I hate to say this, but the last two times I saw them they were so bored and boring that I'm missing the reunion without any guilt.
I saw them in 1994 in support of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. It was amazing and i will be leaving it at that.
Though by all means, cash in boys! You've earned it.
