How, in the 21st century, this late in the fucking game, did so many of us seemingly suddenly lose the ability to say, "THIS WAS WRONG, I AM SORRY, WE NEED TO FIX IT"???
Is mass hysteria just afflicting a whole swath of the population? Because it's like these people -- the pope's defenders, the Tea Partiers, the GOP, and many others I'm sure -- CAN'T EVEN APOLOGIZE AS PART OF A P.R. STRATEGY ANYMORE. Like, they can't even FAKE a genuine fucking apology.
I cannot FATHOM how anyone gets from "children were molested" to anywhere but "WE ARE SO SORRY." It is like ALIENS WHOSE BRAINS WORK COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY have TAKEN OVER THE BODIES of MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.
I have thought about this too! I think the problem is that in order to make the apology, the person first has to admit (to themselves, even!) that they were part of (or connected to) a horrible cover up of child abuse. And most people do not want to think of themselves as horrible people. They don't feel like horrible people, and so when they are confronted with this horrible thing, they have to deny deny deny.
It probably doesn't hurt if you genuinely believe that the Church is the expression of God's will.
Here is the brutal, glorious irony, though: Wouldn't it be great if there were some institution that accepted human imperfection as a given and then offered anyone who wanted it a place and a system in which they could learn to repent, atone, find forgiveness, and be redeemed?
Well, maybe not quite as a horrible as--to choose but one example--a priest who molests. But horrible horrible horrible nonetheless.
What I want to know: just how blinkered does Donohue have to be to think he's making the Catholic Church look good? That IS his job description, right? Supposedly?
I think he sees his job more as "to make other people admit how awesome the Catholic Church is." In reality, though, he's mostly out to convince people to send him money.
My mother actually admitted the other day that all these abuse cases are largely why she's stopped going to church. She said she's angry, embarrassed and ashamed for her church and they don't deserve her defense. As a Polish Catholic, the church was her entire upbringing and she's done with it. Fuck you Bill Donohue, your house is broken, go fix it.
I'm happy that Sinead has found contentment, but a real big part of me wants her to off her meds and and just take these guys to the fire.
