Are we witnessing the commercial comeback for New-York-rap-besides-Jay-Z that everybody's been waiting for? Probably not. While you hear hear Lloyd Banks and Juelz Santana's"Beamer, Benz Or Bentley," on the city streets these days, the song hasn't yet cracked Billboard's national charts. I think it's just okay. A catchy-if-formulaic beat built off the kind of simple, ascending and descending keyboard line that worked for Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" two years ago, and Mims' "This Is Why I'm Hot" the year before that, and playboy rhymes about money, cars and women. Much less exciting, in my opinion, than the grittier sounds issued by Banks' G-Unit colleague Tony Yayo, or Staten Island's resurgent Wu-Tang Clan. The best thing about the video, I think, is Juelz' eye-wear. Wu-Tang's Raekwon was caught on camera in something similar lately, too. So at the very least, we might be witnessing the comeback of one of the greatest and most ridiculous '80s hip-hip fashion innovations: urban ski goggles.

Free Yayo from irrelevance!
These gentlemen appear to think these three auto brands somehow belong to the same class. How fun.
There are some Benzes that could fit in the same category as a Bentley, I guess.
Sure, the CL600 is close. But in terms of premium on brand prestige for prestige's sake alone (as appears to be the focus here) it's like saying you can get a 2 ct diamond at Zales and a 2 ct diamond at Tiffany's so they're the same... I guess the Maybach just didn't start with a "B???"
Any of the McLaren Mercedes are definitely on par with a Bentley, so I think there's a little bit of crossover there.
Even the Maybach you could technically call a Mercedes car, on some level?
Isn't the Maybach actually a Mercedes?
Ha! Jinx, Cho!
(I'd apologize for keeping the page open so long before commenting, but I know you wouldn't want me to do that.)
Hmmm, true. I guess I think about it as "owned" by mercedes... it doesn't carry the emblem. Kind of like how a Mini is not a BMW...
BUT you;re really right and Benz does have comparables. I think it's more the thought that Benz/BMW also have low-end stuff that Bentley does not have and that kind of sullies this kind of comparison for my (old) mind. Kind of like how Dodge has the Viper but tat would never lead me to use Dodge in the same sentence as Lamborghini.
Yeah, I think it's still a weird comparison because the best you're getting with a BMW is like some 750-type ish, which is hardly in the same class.
I think that the Maybach counts pretty hard as a Mercedes though, as when they first came out it was peddled as a Mercedes car*, much more than the Mini/BMW connection.
*Before they realize it hurt the overall branding
I clicked play, but didn't read, and thought, "Where have I heard this before?"
And then you mentioned Lil Wayne. That's it.
Do you ever listen to reggaeton? (Oops, just outed my guilty pleasure ...)
I want to hear the answer to this question.
DAVE DO YOU EVER LISTEN TO REGGAETON???
(BULLET)
Not a lot. I liked that Daddy Yankee beat that was everywhere a couple years ago, "Gasolina." And I always support Noreaga's exploration of new sounds and interests. But the language barrier is a problem for me. Because I liked to listen to lyrics and I don't speak Spanish.
Outkast did a similar titled song in 1995 on the "New Jersey Drive" soundtrack, called "Benz Or Beamer." I like Big Boi and Dre version better.
