CoRoT-9b: I Am Going To Live There!

NOT AT ALL LIKE THISCoRoT-9b! Only 1500 light years away! The size of Jupiter! Lots of fun moons 'n' rings! Approximately the temperature of earth, give or take our own boiling point of water! It may or may not have an atmosphere of methane or something horrible! Race you?

So I'm guessing that Corot – Corot 9a just didn't deliver, for some reason? Unfun moons, maybe?

DoctorDisaster (#1,970)

I actually know this one! Corot 9 would be the star, a or b would be the planet. So only Corot 9a didn't deliver (Due to lackluster alien space babes, not moons; savvy captains have been known to joke about the Corot 9 A-cup).

Huh, I just learned something I think?

C_Webb (#855)

That was fabulously informative and a little Douglas Adamsy to boot. Thank you, Doctor!

So, if I accelerate in my Toyota, I want to aim for A or B, but not the star itself?

ow that hurt (#3,919)

What's an A cup?

Can I swap some credit-default there?

YES YOU CAN!

Urbania (#94)

You definitely won't have telephone service there, or anywhere along the way.

brianvan (#149)

Ha, it's probably the one place you can get a clear AT&T 3G signal! Bet you it's better reception than San Francisco.

Aside from the temperature and breathing problems, could you stand on a gas planet? Wouldn't you kind of sink in? I think I'm not signing up for that race.

You would sink until you displace as much gas as to make you buoyant. How far is not an easy calculation, though, because it depends on the gas density and whatever strength of the local gravitational force. I think. Either way, I'll join you on the sidelines.

Tulletilsynet (#333)

After you hit that buoyancy equilibrium point, how far would you keep going before you bounced?

Maevemealone (#968)

I'll beat you if someone gives me two Adderall.

kneetoe (#1,881)

Yes, those two cats would otherwise hold you back.

WindowSeat (#180)

I'm not going to any planet the size of Jupiter. I have enough weight problems here. http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/

Sure, it sounds great, but your friends will never come visit you.

Your friends will never come visit you if you move to Jersey, so I don't see how this is that much different.

HiredGoons (#603)

@Setec: I'm assuming a Methane atmosphere would smell better than New Jersey.

Tulletilsynet (#333)

Lost: It would be like living in Inwood.

1500 light years is the approximate commute from Hollywood to Long Beach, and I won't go there either.

I'm looking for a planet with a 3 hour work day.

smapdi (#1,306)

Corot is the mission, the name of the spacecraft. It launched on my birthday.

Now I will go back to wondering if Choire or any other male Awl scribe has watched me masturbate online. You all look familiar for some reason.
