I'm not sure why I find myself so affected by the news that Timothy McSweeney has died. As John Donne meditated, any man's death diminishes me, but I think there's probably something about the poignancy of his story that gets me too. [Via]

Talent and ambition thwarted by personal demons? The very definition of 'tragedy,' no?
Wow, I had no idea. Sad
I wonder if there might be royaties due here for the use of the name. Tim's next of kin should contact the attorneys who handled that Kookubura song suit. If those guys could win a case against Men At Work after 27 years, they could probably squeeze a few bucks out of the Eggers media empire.
I know it's not popular to like Eggers, but I do.
There I said it.
And RIP, Timothy McSweeney, there for but the grace of God....
I like Eggers, too. And McSweeney's. Yet I didn't know it was a real person. The story fits. It's amazing and sad and encouraging all at once. Eggers' life is so damned surreal that if it wasn't for the more tragic elements I would envy it.
I can't help but think of the old Irish tale of Mad King Sweeney, which got me through some of my own darker days. It was Seamus Heaney's translation, FWIW.
