Old Person Excited About Old Record, Using The Word "Cocksucker"

Rock 'n' roll's version of the Great American NovelOne of the best albums of all time-the New York Times once called it "rock 'n' roll's version of the Great American Novel," which makes no sense because its creators are English!-is getting reissued. Come May 18th, Exile on Main Street will be released in an expanded version (with ten new, or newish songs.) There is also a DVD, says the Times, "of a new Rolling Stones documentary, called 'Stones in Exile,' which uses footage from an earlier, unreleased Stones film whose name we cannot print here. (The second part of its title is "Blues.")" We can print it! It's "Cocksucker!" "Cocksucker Blues!" I'm deliriously happy!

I'll look forward to the Liz Phair follow-up.

What would be "rock'n'roll's version of the Great American Novel"? I suppose something like Nebraska or Darkness on the Edge of Town is too on-the-nose. Zen Arcade? Paradise Theater!

Bob Greenfield's A Season In Hell with the Rolling Stones, which catalogs the circumstances and exploits behind the '71 summer at Nell-Cote, isn't especially well-written, and there's a good deal of contention around the reliability of its narrator, but the book's a quick enough read if you're looking for a general taste of what those recording sessions were like.

Also worth reading is this blurb on the kinship between Keith Richards and Gram Parsons:

"In a strange turn of events, Parsons' body somehow disappeared from LAX before it could be shipped to New Orleans for burial. You see, prior to his death Parsons stated that he wished to be cremated at Joshua Tree and have his ashes spread over Cap Rock ... To fulfill Parsons' "funeral" wishes, Phil Kaufman and a friend stole his body from LAX and drove it in a hearse to Joshua Tree- where they attempted to cremate it by pouring five gallons of gasoline into the open coffin and throwing a lit match inside. What resulted was an enormous fireball. Police chased them, but according to one account they were unencumbered by sobriety and got away."

ie: Gram Pars

formerly it takes a lot etc.

There's a movie based on that. It's pretty good.

You and I have different definitions of the word "good."

I have a friend who is a major Stones fanatic and we were talking the other night about why The Stones have never released what must be a massive library of unreleased songs, outtakes, alternate versions etc. Dylan and The Beatles have done it, so why not them?

They will be released. Ever so slowly. One expensive but seemingly necessary reissue package at a time.

And then RockBand. And then Lego RockBand.

Unironically speaking, Rolling Stones RockBand would be so so great (assuming they only use the awesome songs!) that I would finally buy a game system just so I could play it all day long every day.

They pulled this stunt earlier with reissue of Get Yer Ya Yas Out. The new tracks were disappointing and added little to the existing canon. Regarding Exile, I have no expectations.

There's usually a reason that stuff is left in the vaults. (And it's not "we want to save some awesome stuff for the reissue in 28 years.")

bong hitler

Agreed. We don't need another ten tracks of rambling, doped-up choogle. Exile is long enough as it is.

Where can I get my ass fucked?"

Back in my younger days (Uncle Tupelo era), all it took to make a guy go goo-goo eyed was to demonstrate my knowledge of every lyric on this album, which inevitably led to drunken singalong and broken promises of lifelong devotion.

At least I think it was my Exile expertise; it may have just been the tiny T-shirts.

It can be both, and it probably was and still could be.

Here is the greatest three-song sequence in the history of recorded music:

"Ventilator Blues"
"I Just Want To See His Face"
"Let It Loose"

Appreciate the boldness, but no.
Not even the best three-in-a-row on Exile.

Honestly, I always think of this as the low point of the album or long playing record.
