More Liquor, More Problems

"A higher density of alcohol sales outlets in an area means closer proximity and easier availability to an intoxicating substance for residents. Perhaps just as importantly, alcohol outlets provide a greater number of potentially deviant places. Convenience stores licensed to sell alcohol may be especially troublesome in this regard, as they often serve not only as sources of alcohol but also as local gathering places with little formal social control."
-Indiana University professor William Alex Pridemore discusses his new study which shows that there is a correlation between the number of locations in which one can buy alcohol in a neighborhood and the rate of violence in that neighborhood. As it turns out, the more places you can buy alcohol, the more assaults you're going to see. Which, you know, wow, who knew?

Because of all that happiness.

Man, there are tons of bars around here; where can I find the deviant ones? I'm just saying, y'know, a man has needs. (Some of which are not for alcohol.)

And then you have to deal with all the "potentially deviant places" that just don't pan out. Like, "man, that place had great deviant potential, but eh."

Also: I think I detect a note of regret in Indiana University professor William Alex Pridemore's writing. So many potentially deviant places with so little formal social control, so little time, etc.

That reminds me - I'm sober.

This is why I believe Mr. Softee should not be licensed to sell Bourbon. It's asking for trouble.

It took TWO professors to come up with this. And I still don't get this "off-premises consumption" business. I remember many years going to the government liquor store in Bethesda, for vodka, and puzzling over the signs saying "In order to encourage home consumption, we sell beer unrefrigerated." My father asked the clerk why Montgomery County all of a sudden wanted its citizens to start drinking warm beer at home. Clerk didn't get it.

Surely we can all agree to blame this on teenagers.

Is there a correlation to increased glove slaps and distance to wineries?
