Yes it is sad when people die bc people close to them are sad to lose someone close . The rest of us though we knew Salinger as public figure, for his public output. Empathy for the loss of others of course. Sympathy in situations of tragedy ok – Salinger was 91 yo. What's the public loss here? He lived a good life or something i guess but what was Salinger doing for us alive? Dead maybe we'll see some of his work published for the first time in like what 50 years. maybe it won't maybe it shouldn't because maybe he really didn't want that to happen, but I too am celebrating the possibility. As far as "news" goes that is great yeah
I mean thanks for the cute obits everyone but i'm more excited to read some new salinger fiction . and hey you all got to outpour as long awaited!
But he's less dead to us! unless bitter, reclusive hermit salinger was the one who lived for you! Nope i think we all liked writer salinger. and now we might see some of that writing salinger live again!
Like, I loved Vonnegut books, and they mean a lot to me (the books do, not the man…despite the fact that he wrote them) and it was sad that he died…but like, I didn't know the guy. He's a stranger. If some other stranger wanted to write something about him, like "Kurt Vonnegut is a baby raping dickhole and the world is a better place without him" because of some personal vendetta, or otherwise…who cares? It does nothing. It neither lessens nor magnifies a single thing on earth. It's a guy saying something about a guy he either knew or didn't know who died. So what?
Bret Easton Ellis is a dick. Quel surprise.
MARKET ON DISAFFECTED, SUBSTANCE-PRONE, SEXUALLY DYSFUNCTIONAL YOUTH CORNERED.
bravo.
Really? Why? You will still always be McInerney's younger brother whether Salinger is alive or dead. This is not a compliment.
It has been undeleted.
Tired of being compared to Holden, Bret?
Too damn bad.
Less than zero interest in what's on your mind, Bret, but thanks for sharing just the same.
All Bret was trying to say is that he has to go return some videotapes.
But he loses major points for not writing it "PAHHHRTEEEEH!!!"
Maybe be just heard about Andrew Lange a few days late?
For Pete's sake, Ellis – Salinger didn't give cover blurbs to anyone. It wasn't a "personal slight."
Douchebag

This was sort of like the Death & Christianity class I took in college.
What i'm trying to say is:
Now he's more dead to his loved ones.
But he's less dead to us! unless bitter, reclusive hermit salinger was the one who lived for you! Nope i think we all liked writer salinger. and now we might see some of that writing salinger live again!
Exactly! This doesn't merit attention.

I'm pretty sure he's making a joke. At least I thought it was funny.
"Listening again to everything The Hold Steady recorded. Is this the greatest American band now? They just got me through a rough month."
He's hilarious!
i don't like either of them but hahaha.
Yeah, Howard Zinn was a dick.
BUT WHAT DO THE MARKETS THINK?!?!
Bret Easton Ellis is still alive?
I thought he died at the end of The Little Friend!
HAH.
Can someone please compile all the tweeted reactions of semi-famous Bennington alums into a listicle?
I wanted to go to Bennington until I spent a summer there.
I never wanted to go to Bennington and then I read The Secret History. And I still didn't want to go.
At least opportunism is still alive and strong.
All morons hate it when you call them a moron.
Bret Easton Ellis: a supposedly talented asshole I'll unfortunately find myself reading somewhere else somehow again.
Who's J.D. Salinger?
