Things Could Always Be Worse (Also: "SUSPECT"?)

DEAR LORD"A Brazilian toddler has up to 50 sewing needles inside him, which doctors suspect were deliberately inserted."

Choire, please.

Just remember throughout your day: THINGS REALLY COULD BE WORSE!

Yeah, they could be hypodermic needles.

Jeez. That kid's going to need a lot of stitches.

I want to go on record as stating that I had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this post, which is HORRIBLE.

Duly noted.

But I thought you would like to think about this for a while.

This reminds me of the monstrous Albert Fish.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Jesus. Was this one necessary?

Before everyone jumps to conclusions, there could be a very reasonable explanation for this. So let's all just calm down until voodoo has been ruled out.

Someone made a very literal voodoo doll.

somewhere, a little calico doll is going "why the fuck does my liver hurt?"

Choire, please let me borrow your time machine. This way I can go back to the moment I came back to my desk with my lunch and NOT open The Awl. Much appreciated.

Yes, but inserted by whom? A precocious little masochist? Or his naughty dom mom?

And he's said to her dozens of times: "Mom, STOP. FUCKING. NEEDLING. ME."

Ok, going to hell now.

Krugmanic Depressive

Alright, horrible beyond horrible. But here's a question: what's the rhythm or pacing of a maniacal act like this? How do you decide a) let's do this fucking thing? and then b) well, that's enough? Do you come back subsequently and say "well, one more"? Is there any conceivable "If the baby does X I will do this n times? How do you get to 50? Eesh.

[I will not click the clicky, for fear of bolting out of work to make sure my kids are alright.]

KC, someone recently advised me not to try to make rational sense of what child molesters do, because that way madness (and more grief) lies.

I think the same advice applies here. (And I didn't click the clicky either.)

Sorry, KD. I can't type.

Choire, I'm with you on this being interesting (likely abuse, so it's certainly horrible as well, but just because it's horrible doesn't mean it isn't interesting), mostly because of this sentence:
"There were no signs of wounds on the boy, doctors said." HuhWhaHuh?

cherrispryte
cherrispryte (#444)

I would assume that was mentioned to indicate 2 things: 1) that there aren't other signs of abuse and 2) that the needles hadn't been inserted (ugh) recently.

ljnd

Or that he ATE them.

HeyThatsMyBike

Yeah, I thought it was probably the same, but thought it might mention scars (i.e. "There were no signs of wounds, but several scars were present)? But perhaps because it's such a small hole (double ugh), the points of origin didn't really scar at all?

HeyThatsMyBike

@ljnd - Nah, thought of that too, and then reread and the article says it is virutally impossible that he swallowed all of them due to the locations of the needles.

garge
garge (#736)

I have heard of IUDs ending up in crazy places, but yes, the article does cite the impossibility.

Did you see that the needles in his organs will not be able to be removed in surgery? I just keep thinking about him going on a trip with his eighth grade class, and the metal detectors going off, and him falling in love with Marisa Tomei and dropping dead at a hockey game.

it was the stepfather, of course.
